The latest Bali bombings, which will probably end been refered to as Bali bomb II, have surprised a lot of people. Who would want to blow up a tourist resort? Only a madman, the logic goes. It has happened alas, but there is not a sense of terror on the streets.
This evening Andy Walker and I went to the airport and there were not lines of people trying leave. Bali is a busy tourist destination, and there are always people coming and going. This evening on Jl. Dhyana Pura in Seminyak, we ate dinner at Waung Kemangi, the new warung that is named after a fragrant leaf. The warung is located opposite Warung 96 and although this part of the street is not usually busy, there were customers in both places. as I type, music belts out from Bahiana and Santa Fe down the street. Its still only 11pm, but people are getting warmed up for a night out.
I asked Andy how it felt to be in a terror zone and he said he was fine, he did not feel overly threatened. The international media has reported Al Queda connected people saying previously that the month of Ramadan will be bloody around the world, so who knows what the crazies are planning. Earlier tonight I posted a warning about Jl. Oberoi. This is just street gossip, but i would feel bad not to share it. Here is my take on things. These terror groups follow patterns, they use the same M.O. They like busy targets, usually on busy nights (Saturday) and between 7pm-11pm ( I guess the JI guys are not late night types). If I was currently in Bali on holiday, I would stay clear of bars, restaurants, nightclubs that are on crowded streets. To me that means no Hard Rock Cafe at night, no Santa Fe, Liquid on Jl. Dhyana Pura, no Trattoria on Jl. Oberoi, no MBarGo in Kuta, no DeJaVu in Legian beach.
When Ramadan is over its likely the trouble will stop, so enjoy your hotel, enjoy the shopping, the beach, quiet restaurants and bars that are not massively pumping. If you are ouside the immediate Kuta resort area your chances of encountering trouble are very small.

I watched a segment on ITV News this evening and couldn’t help thinking they made the pictures fit the line they wanted to take.
A single tourist on an empty beach, shots of restaurants with no customers(early evening perhaps?), a shot of an empty street in front of Bahiana and people queueing at the airport.
If you didn’t know better you’d think visitors were bailing out.
Perhaps those shots were taken after the 2002 event. Who knows? The media often recycle old pictures when they don’t have new ones. The problem is that these old pictures can distort the truth.
Hi,
Do you think the situation is going to be worse than 2002 (after the bali bombing I)?
Best regards,
Raka
Nick you just wrote
“If you are ouside the immediate Kuta resort area your chances of encountering trouble are very small.” What do you class those tables on the beach at Jimbaran Bay as? That was one place I thought would be the last to be targeted. If these people are getting dropped off then what is distance to them?
Bahiana was packed last night, they should ocme back on Friday night and photo that.
Things are quieter, but its not an all out exit. I expect many of the people who have booked holidays to cancel and the majority of people who were thinking of booking, not to.
Downtown in Kuta people do not hve the 9/11 stunned appearance, or feeling from what i can gather from talking to people. I was talking to Andy who has been in Bali for 4 days and Cody an Jeff who both pretty much arrived in the last week how they felt. THey are all fine and Andy was thrilled ot catch a long ride on hi body board, the other guys thrilled to be here starting a new situation.
Don’t buy into all those dramatic tv shots. Just think on Monday Night Football when the camera goes along the side of the field and points at the fans. When you are seeing that back home it seems as the whole stadium is going crazy, but its actually a 100 people or so.
Maybe Jimbaran isn’t in Kuta, but you can roughly call it the Kuta area.
Yes of course there are exceptions to what I said. When you have 1,000 tourists sitting on 1 beach in tight proximity that could attract attention, as could a rock concert at GWK. The point is they look for big groups, tighly packed in high traffic areas (Paddy’s, Sari Club, Kuta Square, Jimbaran retaurants. If you eat dinner at a warung in Canggu or Dreamland you are way safer.

hi nick,
i would do the same - stay clear from the nightlife… but how is the reaction of the ozs and the other tourists??? are they still partying? are the nightclubs closed??? i have no idea what’s up in kuta-town now..
i was in kuta at bom 2002 and i’m shocked that it happened again!!
take care!

Hey everyone,
My first post here. See if it stays.
Anyway my 2 cents worth.
I’m 27 and Australian, from Sydney.
I’ve only been to Bali twice. Once b4 first bombings. And then again after. Bali I found to be an excellent destination no matter where you are from, but more so for us aussies.
1 contributing factor to returning was like most others, to help the locals get back on their feet and alike.
Hey before everyone starts blasting me I must stress that it is not the people of Bali that are responsible for this next round of attrocitiys.
Yeah someone who is crazy did it, ok agreed, but where does the responsiblity go to? As I said earlier its not the peoples fault. Fair enough, some say for example that we need to support them in their time of need. Did it b4, but as much as it dissapoints me I will not be returning to bali or anywhere else in indonesia for that matter. Hey don’t get me wrong, I would love nothing more than to get on a plane to denpasar and do some shopping, swimming, partying etc. But it’s not gonna happen. Why? I mean isin’t it obvious.
Hello Australians are being targeted to be killed for some crap terrorism orgainasion trying to prove a point.
Bali itself is a pretty laxed island, but this also goes for the authorities.
It’s too easy for the crazys to get a bomb and plonk it whereever Australians are. The police are low in numbers and can easily be bribed to turn a blind eye. Especially if that financially benifets the police officers family.
No I’m not being difficult.
I have also been to Thailand like 6 times. I was in Phuket 3 months b4 tsunami and 3 months after, to help them out. I will be returning to Phuket at this stage but I just can’t do it for Bali after this attack.
Oh yeah just heard about the warning SMS’s going around telling everyone to stay away from Seminyak.
To maya who posted a comment too - If I was in Bali at the time of the bombings and was not personally effected, I would most probably stay untill I was due to go home and still go out and party, for the same reasons as those wanting to return to Bali, to support the locals.
Anyway I send all my regards out to everyone who has been effeted by the latest attacks. And my sympathy for the people of Bali who will now suffer as a result of this.
I hope they catch the bastards anyway.
why corby’s sister on location at bombing time? why recorded video circulated quite soon after bombing ?
why australian forensic team also reach location quite fast?
sure we know there is militant muslim in the world but pointing them to responsible for bali bombing is very naive. so many clues and no one supports the media prejudice.
i read some aussie tourist say they never come to bali again and switch to fiji, hawaii, etc..etc.
do u know why people come to Bali..because it’s very cheap due to low indonesia’s exchange rate.
i doubt that low budget tourist can afford to spend holiday in Fiji, Hawaii, etc etc
To Perawan,
There are alot of cheap destinations such as Bali. There will always be some aussie tourists coming to Bali, let s get that straight. Especially the surfers.
Low budget travellers can go to:
Thailand
Malaysia
Vietnam
Laos
Sabah
just to name a few…
Yes because of the exchange rate Bali is very attractive. Because of the bomb rate it is un-attractive.
The australian forensic team have had the experience of the previous bombings and acted accordingly. That was why there out there so fast.
Do you not want australian forensics to come? if not, explain why.
We (australians) do not for 1 minute blame the people or the country of Bali whatsoever. Your people are a warm friendly bunch, and we feel very sorry that this has happened.
Media is media and I have nothing to do with that, but its their job to report on whatever information comes to hand.
What problem exactly do u have with the recorded video circulating?
Scott A.
What does staying at the Four Seasons have to do with anything?
Your post is basically a duplicate of another persons post. Please read them b4 posting.
I work in the travel industry and have an extensive itinery.
It might be better to put in ….
“In my opinion……” Rather than “Nothing on Fiji or Hawaii comes close”
Failing to do this presents your comments as biased, and self opinionated.
Well I can say having been to those countrys that they are unique and individual.
The 3 aformentioned destinations are all full of culture, history, and presence.
In my opionion, they all offer the best hotels in the world.
And if you want to get technical you will find (with some research!!!) that Hawaii and Fiji have some excellent 6 star hotels.
Where do u think Bali hotels get their ideas? From other island holiday destinations such as Hawaii and Fiji…
And whats with your name? Tony Soprano?
Ur a mafia boss eh? hmmmm…
Tony Soprano?
He is perhaps a WOP (those poor italian immigrants Without Papers) :->
I bet you he is a fake, pretending to be an italian guy. He is more likely to be an indo who lives abroad. a f&cking moron. hee…heee…
why bother with grammar..? its normal if indonesian make mistakes with english. it’s not our native language anyway. we have our own language. but it’s really idiot if someone who use english as native language still make mistake. thats the risk if u can’t invent ur own language , just borrow from more powerfull country with nuclear bomb.
its not indonesian who bring 4 seasons to bali. westerner pack bali with their investment. thats why they really want bali to be independent. dont imagine that bali will be the next east timor
To the fake usil who posted the previous message:
STOP POSTING MESSAGE IN MY NAME!!! YOU MUST BE ONE IDIOTIC PERSON.
You sound like tony S, that f&cking imbecil.
so can anyone inform me about the state of tourism affairs now - are there the same amount of visitors in Kuta? Are the Four Seasons type hotels packed - are people buying/renting property and investing in Bali?
Next year, on my vacations, I was planning on going to Peru, but maybe I’ll go and visit Bali again.
Do they think the world will stop and surrender? Where in the sacred book is it written that you can murder innocent people? Shame on them, cause they fight for a religion they don’t understand!!!
I see this Islamic radicals has the crusaders of Islam, and has it happened to the crusaders, they to will be only a shadow of the past in some years (hopefully not long), and history will judge them for they’re wrongs, cause there are no rights in they’re actions!
