Thursday night saw parts of Bali and Java without power. When I first came to Bali in 2003 power outages in Kuta, Legian and Seminyak were regular thing. In the last 12 months they have been virtually nil as far as I can tell. Thursdays power outage was itself a surprise, but the warnings of power outages in general were already there. Bali has an increasing demand for power with more shops, restaurants, nightclubs and villas getting built all the time. We get our power from Java and capacity is limited by oil supply, among other things. The recent oil company crisis threatened to send parts of the country into darkness, but Bali was spared.
The latest power outage in Bali was due to a technical problem in the systems interconnection network. The cause of the problem is unknown. Jakarta was completely blacked out which must have been a weird sight and a real pain for people trying to get home. Many hotels here in Bali have generators so guests should not be inconvenienced by short-term outages in future. One cool thing that happended was that one of our light bulbs that had burned out, somehow came back to life when the power came back on.
