Bacteria sent to the Indonesian embassy in Canberra

Wednesday news sources reported that a package containing a biological agent was sent to the Indonesian embassy in Canberra. The embassy is now closed indefinitely and 22 of the staff remain inside in isolation.

The motive behind this attack was probably the Schapelle Corby verdict and is an example of emotion completely overruling logic. This attack will not solve any of the issues that surround the Corby case and will only irritate decent people overseas.

It is easy to get drawn into emotional displays and outbursts. When there is a big political or economic event (9/11, Asian economic crisis, foreign troops in Timor etc.) people make illogical links to things and sometimes their actions are completely out of character. I remember right after 9/11 a taxi driver in England got his neck broken by his customers, when they found out he was from Afghanistan. With a belly full of beer it made complete sense to them (he was an Afghan, Afghan = terrorist, terrorist = 9/11). The fact that Afghans did not blow up the Twin Towers and the fact that he was living in the UK driving a taxi did not seem to matter at that moment.

Who knows whether Schapelle Corby is innocent or not? I know that in Indonesia the investigative procedures are not up to the standard of Australia, regarding evidence collection (no fingerprints, analysis of the drugs etc.). That is something that should be changed in future. The problem I see with trying make individual legal cases into political situations is that you are always going to get verdicts you do not like, the OJ Simpson verdict, for example. In that case so much evidence, testimony, cross-examination, was allowed that virtually all the facts were blurred. If OJ were tried here in Bali he would be found guilty, which many Americans would love.

Which system is better? Who knows. They can all do with some improvement most likely. Acts of terrorism and arguments to make the Corby case political are not the answer.

Hopefully this will turn out to be some harmless substance. If it is some special, not easily obtainable substance, then where would mindless, emotionably disturbed Corby sympathisers get it from?

It may be people who would would like to stir up trouble between Australia and Indonesia. If so, then this is an ideal time to do something like this.

Either way, if and when they are caught, I hope it is in Indonesia where they would face terrorist charges.

Most Australians, regardless of what they may think about the Corby case, will be absolutely horrified at this incident. I hope that Indonesians and others in the world community realise that most Australians want peace and co-operation with other countries and with their people.

Hi Rex,

Well put. I only hope there are no repercussions from this barbaric act of blatant terrorism on the Indo Embassy.

Hi guys!! the substance wasn’t dangerous at all
its was biology chemical but not harmful even though its was a chaos for the embassy staff, the pm said who ever did it should be punished if they find out who did it,the person will be sent behind bars for up to 10 years.
how is that?…

This is the work of some radical idiots with too much time on their hands. What they are not getting,is that their actions are only harming the appeal.Maybe that is what they want!I will always come back to Bali.I only hope that the Balinese donot blame all Aussies for the actions of these idiots.

Just try to put yourself into the place of judges who’s going to take care Corby’s appeal. If you’re going to reduce the sentence, then people might think that the act of terror does some goods in this case. Well regardless the biological material they sent isn’t harmful, it was the act of terror, and if I’m the judge I wouldn’t give any discount for Corby. 20 years is the luckiest.

According to news reports tonight, the Foreign Affairs Comittee in Indonesia is considering putting out travel warnings to Australians.

Let’s hope the actions of an asinine fuckwit doesn’t stir up the radicals in certain parts of Indo to produce an encore to their performance years ago.

I for one would not set foot in Java just at the moment!.

Nick i agree with what you have stated. Its getting bloody stuped this “Corby” case.

Now if people really want to help Schappelle it would be more beneficial to write to her and send her products that will make het time in the slink easier. (and i dont mean any of the funny weed)

Honestly all threats and things like this bacteria scare will do is ensure Schappelle does all twnety years and all of it in a dirty stinking prison.

Like the Balinese chap has stated on this forum, Schappelle cannot even be pardoned unless she admits guilt as the president cannot pardon an innocent person.

There has been cases where people have served thirty years instead of getting out a lot earlier because they never admit guilt. I think even if i was innocent in Schappelles’s case i would admit guilt apoloigise and send the president a plea for a pardon as this is probably her best chance.

One thing for sure is that even if Schappelle does admit guilt and go for a pardon, there might of been to much damage done already for the president to give her a pardon. Yes cases like the bacteria scare will only do harm to Schappelle and not any good at all. So come on all you lot who are secretly applauding this act, get real.
