Australian tourists staying away from Bali

Australian tourists are, for the time being staying away from Bali. With all the stuff that’s been going on from the Schapelle Corby, Michelle Leslie, the Bali Nine, Bali Bomb II, prophets cartoons and Papua, its not surprising things have been quiet. In the long run I reckon most things are cyclical.

Tourism was picking up nicely after Bali Bomb I, then October 2005 came along and knocked out our short term business. If you look at Bali from a 10,000ft level, there is plenty of construction, plenty of investment. The island is, according to some realters, in the same stages as Hawaii in th 50’s. Underdeveloped, a place waiting to explode (no pun intended). Plenty of choice real estate here, as long as you make sure of your paperwork. As one Aussie expat said to me, “I think we’re on a good wicket here.”

The biggest events in world history have been geological, and as long as Gunung Agung doesn’t erupt we’ll be good for the future.

For Bali to boom it has to get a grip on the security situation. We all know the actual level of security in places like Indonesia’s airports and sea ports, not to mention places that seemingly have no police presence. The regional Balinese government needs to demand more autonomy and begin to set up its own security apparatus to deal with the terror threat, which will be long-term. Java is becoming Taliban-land with places like Tanggerang, a massive urban area of three million people, enforcing their own form of Sharia. With one hundred and twenty million Muslims, the vast majority having little real education, Java is the perfect place to recruit Islamic terrorists.

people will come back..and the ones who won’t come to Bali in the future were never going to in the past. Corby and the nine idiots won’t even be remembered in 5 years time. Most people can’t focus their attentions for that long.
I was in Bali in February/March this year and while I expected it to be quiet because of the rain it was busier than I imagined it would be. Wouldn’t stress too much.

It seems not only Australian tourists are keeping away. It is really worrying to know of supposed imminent attacks and I reckon most people would not want to take the risk. Even though all flights and accommodations have been confirmed for my trip in early May, I too can’t help wondering if all will be well…

Winnie, Bali is dead quiet these days, regardless of what Sebastian says. Just stay away from the hot spots (especially Kuta and Ubud) and you’ll be fine. I was on Bali the night of the Kuta/Jimabaran bombing–heard the blasts, but was nowhere near the area.

Just about everybody we know in Darwin, Australia headed over for the Easter holiday. Wish we could’ve been there too.
It’s a safe bet it’ll remain a favourite destination for people here. It’s actually cheaper to get to than anywhere inside our own country.
We’ll be back later in the year.

Florida still has a bad reputation because a number of German tourists were slain there in the ’90s.
