Australian arrested for hashish in Bali

hashish6_sm.jpgThe subject of drugs is in the news again with the arrest of an Australian expat getting caught with a thimble full of hashish. The extent to which Indonesia goes to punish drug abusers is being brought to the worlds attention with every passing week. Their zero-tolerance attitude does not leave much room for mistakes. This latest incident involves 43 year old John Julian Pyle being arrested in his home in Ubud with 1.8gm of hash. That does not exactly put him in the king-pin category, but when the cops want you any amount will do. For this small amount Mr Pyle faces a maximum sentence of 10-years in jail and $65,000 fine. The arrest was the result of a 3-week police surveillance following a tip-off. Seems like a waste of time for me, but anyone who has been here for a while knows there is always more going on than meets the eye. Maybe a solution can be reached. An expensive solution. No matter what the reason for this guys arrest, its a heads-up to all partiers in Bali. Do not use drugs while you are here. There are people who are looking to trip you up in a big way. Just the other night I was eating in a pizza restaurant and the people at the next table were hollering out loud about buying magic mushrooms down the street!

Yes Nick mate i think you are spot on about the drugs scene. Wow i cant believe the story about the 1.8GS of wacky baccy or a thimble full. They really are clamping down on any drugs, now matter the type or amount. A drug is a drug in the Indo Narcotics division of the police. I just cant believe they would put the time and manpower in to getting a hold of a thimble full of dope….amazing. As you say Nick you have to be bloody foolish to get involved if the stakes are that high. Yup folks i will stick to the local jungle juice and nothing other than alochol.Even then i would get paranoid someone would shove a couple of ectasey tabs in my pocket while i am sozzled. Yes me bees vigilant i thinks me so and a bit more sensible than me sounds as i write this last sentence thee all probably think poor thick b******. Hee hee

Yeah there is a nasty game going on in town. It’s called bust the bule and we can all share the proceeds. One visit to the local jail confirms this. A 10 year sentence becomes an eight year, then six year, etc. and you guessed it cash fuels your exit. Similarly kids in Kuta are extorted when they bite on the continual offers of drugs. All one can say is that this nonsense cements one’s idea that Indo is one of the most corrupt nations on Earth and puts a lot of people off going to Bali should it continue.
