The recent arrest of Australian fashion model Michelle Leslie is very surprising considering the amount of media attention given to the Schapelle Corby trail and the case of the Bali Nine. Michelle's parents back in Sydney said she was not a drug user and didn't even take aspirin. According to a Sydney Morning Herald article, Michelle has told police she has been 'getting on an ecky' for a while now. She even claims to be addicted, which sounds like baloney to me. If she only uses it at special events, how can she be addicted?
Over the last 20 years millions of people have been to parties and popped a 'happy', its very unfortunate that she did it here in Bali and got caught. Seeing young woman waste her life in jail is a real shame. I reckon Indonesia has a perfect right to set its own rules and if they are harsh so be it. My problem is the whole drug selling business. Everyone knows you can buy ecstasy in certain nightclubs. In the past I have had characters come up to me at the bar and casually offer the stuff, not put off by the first refusal either. Why are these guys not getting apprehended, why it is always the tourist who gets 20 years for possession? I think we all know why and the writing is on the wall.
Good luck to Michelle and her defense team. Maybe the 'I'm addicted' ploy will work. Better to get Hotman to do some 'lobbying' behind the scenes I reckon.

G’Day Nick,
The random urine testing issue made the media big-time here in Oz today.
Pee in a cup -was that with Ham?.
Urine testing, should by all rights, be done after the arrest and not before. This is an outright invasion of privacy. Are they really that fucking stupid.
Next thing you know they will be stopping people on the street and asking for a urine test!.
For young Aussies and other people who are coming out to Bali and intend on hitting the party scene, I would say don’t get lulled into a false sense of security. If you avoid drugs out here you’ll be okay. But just because some local is standing there on the main street and saying “Allo mate” in an Aussie accent doesn’t mean he’s cool or its okay to buy from him. These guys do this because they have ‘friends in high places’ who are looking for people to trap.
G’Day Nick,
Well put. Take heed those folk who are travelling to Bali or the rest of Indonesia - especially Bali.
Yes great - since many of the police now have less income from selling drugs (its a fact they are a big part of the drug trade) - they can use the pee tests to start extorting money from tourists. And what is the penalty if you dont pass a pee test (they are not 100% accurate) - 5 years jail ? Maybe Alex Downer should think before he starts making statements letting other country’s governments invade people’s privacy. Alex..what rights do I have - lets face it if you fail a pee test you can be held in jail for up to 6 months. Maybe best to start avoiding indonesia for your vacation and going to countries that respect peoples rights.
People’s rights are an interest subject, especially when they go overseas.
When you run a website people sometimes get an idea they have a right to post on it, a right to be advertised for free on it, and you need their permssion to link to their site. Its all backwards, and is the same with individual rights overseas.
As a foreigner in Indonesia you don’t have many rights. Laws are only as good as the level to which they are enforced. There may be laws on the books, but try getting them in practice. Hotman is the best person to ask. He has basically said ‘cases get solved over here by what happens behing closed doors’.
I have been pulled over many times at police road blocks, but after showing my ID am allowed to go. If you are clean you probably won’t have a problem, however if you have drugs in your system they will hammer you.
I know many Aussies like to smoke and that marijuana stays in your system for a long time. I think this new law will definitely affect Bali traffic and the nightlife traffic. Who runs the night scene here? That’s another whole can of worms!
The arrest of Michelle Leslie in Bali is a case of entrapment at which Islam is adept. Islam pursues the objective of world domination and young women like Michelle Leslie are easy prey for their conversion activities. Instead of going to Bali, Australians would be better of heading to Goa in India. Australia’s leaders have bee shown to be naive by their moralising in the teeth of the barbarity of Muslims. They should certainly not be apologists for them.
Oh dear, and here’s me thinking the majority religion in Bali was Hindu Dharma! (He, he..!)
To all,
good people with a good way to live doesn’t worry about ‘drug trap’ or anything like that… And also they always comfort travelling to Bali or another place…
I drink alcohol in moderation and have never smoked tobacco or anything else, or otherwise got onto illegal drugs, so I have no axe to grind. I regard the prohibition policies of most countries as unlikely to get the results which most governments hope for, but hey I don’t make the rules.
In Australia, we have police manned “booze buses” and we get stopped for random breath testing. Some people regard this as an infringement of their civil liberties, but I prefer it to sharing the road with a large number of alcohol affected drivers. I see the Bali initiative as something similar, although I would feel concerned for people who smoked marijuana before entering Indonesia getting caught up in this.
About a year ago, there was a reported situation in England where the police had good reason to believe that a certain pub was frequented by drug dealers. So they closed the street off, detained the suspects and offered them an on-the-spot option of being strip searched inside a police vehicle or being screened by a device which “sees” through clothing and makes you virtually nude to the operator. Apparently the operation was a great success and the British police said that they would do it again, as and when they considered it necessary.
An infringement of civil liberties or not? Maybe OK with suspected armed terrorists, but where do we draw the line?
The difference between booze busses and the random searching of people for drugs is that a drunk behind the wheel puts everyone around him in peril. Someone walking around town or hanging out at the pub/club is somewhat less likely to cause an incident. I think there are better ways to catch out dealers in our midst than randomly searching people or using ‘x-ray glasses’. Under cover cops asking to by drugs for example. Maybe less efficient but much less invasive on the innocent.
Maybe its me. But why do white people even go there. HELLO.

Funny how many foreigners we see facing 5 to 15 years and all the press. But what have the sentences been for local indonesians caught with 2 pills or positive pee tests. What about those actresses recently caught in Jakarta ? - Clearly the Indonesians are discriminating against foreigners here.
