Australia applies for prisoner transfer with Indonesia

Great news for Schapelle Corby and the Bali Nine. The Australian government today applied for prisoner transfer with Indonesia. Australian government representatives met President SBY in Jakarta to discuss the matter. Of course this reviewing of the possibility of a treaty was brought to bear by the Schapelle Corby trial, but lawmakers from both the Australian and Indonesian sides agreed any treaty must be fair and apply evenly across the board, not just to Schapelle. I am sure the Bali Nine are toasting Bintangs down and Bounty ship right now.

Another spin off from this move is that France, Pakistan, Chile, Peru and Argentina also applied for a treaty. Great news for Michael Blanc and his loyal mother. Michael is locked up in Kerobokan with about 25 to go. His amazing mother moved out from France and set up a new life in Bali to be with him. She was the lady who got me the interview with Bob. It would be wonderful if he could be sent home to France.

One of the sticky issues is going to be the parity of sentence. If someone like Michael Blanc has 25 years left, should he still have to do the whole amount, or can a French court reduce it? We will see and hope that a good solution can be found so young people can get on with their lives again.

My understanding is that the accord will allow the prisoner to return to their own country to serve the full sentance, with no reduction.

It will be interesting to see how long this takes. The media told us some weeks ago that Australia was in line to discuss the accord behind the countries you’ve already mentioned and that we’d have to wait our turn, which could be a year or two. We’ll have to wait and see.

And how about an Indonesian man doing say 2 years in the comparative luxury of an Australian low security prison farm for an offence which would have got him 10 years in Kerobokan. He wouldn’t want to go back, particularly if his sentence was likely to be increased.

Maybe he would apply for political asylum.

based on the description of prison in this forum, i’d rather spend my time in a bali prison than an australian prison. at least in a bali prison i could visit the beach daily :)

I feel so sorry for Schapelle Corby and I hope, that she will go back to Australia free or with reduced sentence. But, if she will cannot escape from this heell, then will be better when she will die as soon as possible. Death is better than “life” in Kerobokan hell. I hope that she will soon either free or dead. A matter of course better be, than she will escape alive from hell.
