When you live in Indonesia you have to be prepared for bad news. We’ve had the bombing, SARS, the tsunami and a host of other things that have not contributed to the economic health of the country.
I don't want to dwell too much on the latest scare because for one, I don’t know much about it and two, it will probably way less serious than some articles suggest. The Avian flu has killed some kids in Java and has the potential for far greater damage. If you are coming to Bali and are worried you have no need to be at this point. Its people who are handing live birds who are at risk, not people eating satay ayam. At this point the condition of Bali is fine and its good to remember that in the tropics all kinds of things pop up once in a while. Every few years in Africa Ebola pops up and is contained, that is a disease far more contagious than avian flu.
Anyway let's hope this latest scare is contained and the population protected.

I agree – serious but the average tourist needn’t worry much about Avian Flu reports in Indo. I lived in south China’s Guangdong Prov during Bird Flu scare & visited Thailand during that outbreak. Right – most people affected actually handled animals. Well, maybe the latest scare shouldn’t affect Bali travel plans unless people plan on killing and plucking their own chickens for dinner…….he he!

LilyPond,
I would be more concerned with stomach problems than anything else. You have not yet developed resistance to local bugs, so just be careful of where and what you eat and drink. Drink only bottled water, and don’t take ice with your drinks. Have a jolly good time.
I’ll just mention Tom that ice isn’t a problem. In accordance with govt regulations, it’s made from safe water. You’re right about only drinking bottled water however. A good thing to remember is not to let the shower water go into your mouth and only use bottled water when cleaning your teeth.
Good advice indeed.
