While it turned out to be very memorable and well worth the risks (since I didn’t die!), people should be aware of the dangers of driving on their own. I nearly had about 10 heart attacks driving from Kuta to Pemuteran. It was an eight-hour trip to go 60 miles that involved driving through the mountains, navigating without proper signage, crazy local drivers, rain, skinny lanes with many of obstructions just off the pavement, a vehicle with poor brakes and acceleration, driving on the “wrong” side of the road, and using a left-handed stick. If you are brave enough, be prepared to get lost numerous times, take frequent breaks from the stressful driving, and like Nick said, use it as an opportunity to explore the wonders of Bali.
