The tsunami in Aceh has spawned many independent groups trying to help the people up there as well as pledges of aid from other countries. My big concern was that the massive amount of money being generated ( the Australian government is donating $1 billion AU) will not get to the people.
I recently bumped into a fellow from Canada in Global Xtreme internet café in Kerobokan who is helping to organize another aid group, this time very focused on how the aid will be spent.
His name is Sean and he is an expert is logistics and planning. After spending a couple of weeks in Aceh (which is in the extreme west of Indonesia, north of Medan) he has been instrumental in getting things moving, the name of the charity is called Friends Of Indonesia and their project is called Adopt A Village. The idea is they generate funds, choose a village to help and have direct communications with the village chiefs. Sean told me they have already chosen a village that lies close to a main road and which can have a great impact on the area. There is a local Balinese board of directors and a team of people like Sean. When the village needs a new school they make a request to the board. The board can accept or reject it and the logistics people figure out how much money is needed for the project.
Hopefully this project will inspire others like it and create an environment where the accounting for aid distribution is transparent.
Here in Bali the dry weather continues and it is a steambath. We had a small earthquake this morning but as far as I can tell there is no damage.

Australian government donates one billion Australian Dollars for the recovery process of Tsunami Disaster
You Indonesians are weak hypocrites. The Australian embassy in Jakarta was BOMBED, and you’re complaining about talcum powder being posted to you. Get over it.
The people of Bali should follow the example of East Timor. They should fight for their rights and kick the Javanese out of Bali. The good people of Bali should cecede from the evil and corrupt state of Indonesia now. They should fight for a justice system that will serve the people fairly. We have seen from recent events how unfair and dishonest the Indonesian justice systems is.
Javanese - get out of Bali.
Justice for Shappelle Corby now.
One day soon the evil state of Indonesia will break up. The world will then be a better place.

The 1 billion was actually donated by the Australian public
