The anti-pornography bill has stirred the blood of Balinese people because of the direction it is coming from, Muslim Java. One voice of calm was Muslim cleric, Mustofa Bisri, who represents 40 million Muslims. Bisri said ” “The House should accommodate as many people’s aspirations as possible,” referring to the mulit-cultural make up of Indonesia.
If you go back to the 1930’s and even later, you will find Balinese women selling fruit at the local market and in the street, wearing just a sarong around their waist. No one was outraged or insulted. If the anti-pornography bill is pased in its present form, people’s attire will come under the law. Women will not be allowed to show their shoulders or legs and can be jailed for doing so. Forget about enjoying the beach.
Bali has a $4 billlion a year tourist industry. Surely cool heads will prevail and everything to support that industry will be done.

Cool heads??? You are dealing with politicians [who are the same the world over] who want to get elected at the next election. Since when does common sense apply, when there are votes at stake?
Lets face it, they dont give a toss about Bali, otherwise the entry visa tax would have been waivered etc.
I clicked on the blue printed Mustofa Bisri. I get The Jakarta Post, but the Mustofa Bisri info is nowhere. This very often happens with the Jakarta Post.
As Mustofa said I think the prime motivation of this is fear, fear of the (Islamic) culture here being swamped by the western. I looked at in more detail here, http://www.indonesiamatters.com/142/porn-pornoaksi/ . Bali unfortunatly is just a small place and there are some in Jakarta who couldn’t care less about it.
