Bali bombers live to smile another day

The 3 terrorists convicted of conspiring to bomb Kuta in 2002, were given a new lease of life on Monday. Lawyers for Ali Gufron, Muklas and Amrozi said they would make a judicial appeal, to the death sentences.

I know many people were hoping this would be the last day these guys were around, but Indonesia does have a legal process (when it wants to) and the bomber’s lawyers know how to play the game. My thought was, the 3 should get an extra cell mate, while waiting for the appeal, John Mark Karr. I mean, with a guy who wanted a sex change, and beats 6 year old girls to a pulp, would you feel comfortable going to sleep next to him? Just the tonic to wipe the smile off of Amrozi’s face.

No, they should have inmate like Sumanto to be their cell mate. There you have Scary Movie 5.

Is it just me or does it seem strange that the people who recruited and trained others to strap explosives to themselves with the promise of going to a better place and providing a better afterlife for their family, as well as spouting in court that they would be happy to be martyres in the name of that bloke they follow, now have doubts about actually going to that better place themselves?
The Indonesian government is being given a great propaganda opportunity here to use these appeals against the death penalty in a massive PR push and let everyone in the country know if you are thinking about hooking up with guys like this, that the architects of terrorism don’t actually have faith in their own religion so, therefore, cannot be considered followers of Islam.
This has to be an eye-opener to all.
Then again it could be the lawyers just trying to get squeeze a few more billable hours out of a terminal case.
Anyhow, soap box away.
