Much like a soap opera that just won’t die, Bali bombers, Amrozi, Samudra and Muklas, are giving their shot at escaping the death penalty.
The 3 were expected to get a firing squad in August, but instead filed an appeal. I find Indonesian law a total mystery. You can conspire to commit mass murder, and a get off with 4 years in jail, but then get death for drug trafficking. Amrozi and Co. were convicted on a law retroactively, which, by most people’s standards is illegal. Nevertheless they wound up in jail and are now filing an appeal against that conviction. Surely they could of been convicted on about 20 other laws, including, murder, illegal use of explosives, etc. If that crime was commited in a western country, retroactive law or not, they’re guilty of enough other stuff, its game over.
If you want to kick start Bali’s tourism, hold the firing squad on Kuta Beach, and sell tickets $100 a pop. I reckon half of Australia would show up.

On the face of it, they would appear to have an excellent case. They were convicted under retrospective legislation, and the constitutional court has now ruled that process invalid. If you allow executions to proceed under those circumstances you risk your legal system becoming even more of an international laughing stock than it is already.
On the other hand if you throw out the convictions under the retrospective terrorism laws then they have to be retried under other laws, which will involve all the associated appeal processes including possible appeals for clemency.
As an opponent of the death penalty, that wouldn’t normally worry me. Except in this case I read one news report that at least one of them may have been involved in the planning of the second bombing from his prison cell. The one exception I would make to my opposition to the death penalty is if the only way to protect the public is with the death penalty.
hmmm that stinks of hypocracy. You’re either for state sanctioned killing or you are against it..john coward’s not too sure on this one either.
Unfortunately in this area there are no grey areas.
Me personally im for it..kill em all, turn them into martyrs. And turn those drug donkeys into sorry sons of bitches.Oh and the 1 (girl?????)
Rubbish. No hypocracy there at all. I’m totally opposed to the death penalty. It’s just that I’m even more opposed to allowing innocent people to be murdered when we could stop it. It is the same principle as that of permitting police to use lethal force if it is necessary to save lives.
To allow proven murderers to conspire with others to commit further murders has nothing to do with opposition to state sanctioned murder. It’s just bone-headed and irresponsible.
so you basically want them killed because you are scared of them…ok
No Sebastian. That isn’t what I said, nor is it true.
I agree with you Geoff. No one likes to see innocent people murdered. And in a perfect world it wouldn’t happen. But in this world unfortunatly it does..on both sides of this war.The death penalty will only succeed in turning these people into heroes for those that choose to follow the same ideology.
I just think that in this and similar cases a more just sentence would be life in prison.
Yes there is always the argument that if they are alive then it is possible they could conspire to kill more people..don’t worry too much about that as whether they are alive or not I have no doubt someone else will step up into their places.
Just my opinion
Could hold an auction too–the highest bidders get to pull the triggers.
