Wednesday Feb 3rd in Kuta Bali

If you have never been to the tropics there are some things you have got to get used to.

Tropic storms are on of them and last night did we have beauty! I was laying in bed around midnight and the rain was coming down pretty good, ‘just what the island needs’ I told myself. Just then the force seemed to get increased by 50%, then by another 30%…it was hammering. For the next couple of hours thunder and lightning ripped across the sky and when I say thunder I mean ‘nuclear bomb loud’. This would crack, then boom, continuing across the sky.

This morning things were peaceful, the new grass that has been installed by my landlord is still in place and there wasn’t any other visible damage although Jl. Legian was partially flooded.

I ran into my French friend Patrice in Cafe Moka at 7.30am this morning. “I’m still looking for a place to live,” I told him. “Why don’t you check out the places I told you about?” he said, “I tell you, but sometimes man you are really just into your own trip.”

After finishing my bread we rode over to Gang Bima close to Jl.Dhyana Pura in Seminyak to check out 2 places, one for 20m rp the other for 25m rp.

The cheaper place was in a family compound, 2 storey, fan, own bath. The more expensive one was larger but not as nice looking. It had a natural bamboo roof with a half loft.

I told the owner I’d take the cheaper one for 18m rp and left. I called him back a few hours later and he seemed to agree. Will see him tonight at 5pm and move in tomorrow. This is good as I don’t want to completely change gears now and move to another part of the island. I already know where to rent my motorbike, do my laundry, find an ATM and don’t want to figure it all out again.

I read in the Jakarta Post that the VOA processing is getting better and I hope its is. Apparently there are 4 new money changing tellers right there for passengers to use.

Hi Nick,

We are having some violent storms here too - the east coast of Oz.
We received a parcel today in our PO Box addressed to Juliana, it looks like the chilli sauces from Worldwidemike have arrived! The box was opened by customs, hopefully they didn’t confiscate any. Juliana will have something to look forward to on Saturday when she arrives - yum, yum!

G’Day Nick,

Glad to read that you got new digs. It’s definitely a wise move of yours not moving down to Jimbaran. All the hassle of re-organising is a shit eh.

With these new regs Nick, what’s the situation with a business visa like you currently have?. Do you have to cruise out of Indo after 30 days?.

Must be very noisy at gang Bima. Lot’s of chicken around in that area and also the noise of Jln Dyana Pura could be a problem. Have stayed close by at Jln Dyana Pura no 7 for 1,2 mill a month. It’s not as noisy anymore but, still all the traffic late at night after most clubs close, keep you awake.
Good luck at your new place.

Glad you found a place, Nick. I’m with you not wanting to move too far and start all over again.

Looking forward to more detail on your new home.

That storm must have been a beauty. I hear the wind through the trees in the back of our home sometimes. The sound connects me with nature as I lay in my warm, cozy bed. Something spiritual about it.

Hi Tracey, yes I am excited and am almost packed. My sponsor letter never arrived to get my visa so will have to get the VOA. It is a pity as I would have stayed twice as long and spent twice the money. Good luck for Dede, I look forward to meeting you guys soon.

Nick, looking forward to meeting up with you too. I am on a budget of 600,000Rp a day so I will be taking you up on the free beer!!

Geez Angie, Rp600,000 would last me a looonnggg time!.

Hey Scottycool,

Wombat Wanderers are global citizens and are therefore exempt of any visas!. Trouble is they can’t avoid border visas!.

Hi Tracey,

Nick didn’t even buy me a beer!. Anyway, I have my own personal ‘nut-crusher’ - Candika! (He, he…!)

It absolutely poured again last night in Lovina - 5 solid hours, with multiple power outages. We just found a place up high and watched the wind. The water was so deep in the streets as it headed toward the sea that it ran into the stores and kept the internet cafes offline this morning (and the water was still draining). Coming across the island today you could see that it had been this way everywhere - flattened corn in the fields, full gutters, downed trees, etc. - but no permanent harm done it seems.

Nick, back in Kuta (just passing through for a day - great to use a fast internet connection!) if you have time to hook up.

Hey All,

Such confusion over dates etc. Didn’t you realise it was GROUNDHOG DAY!

Hey, great news that the hot sauces arrived, Elle. When does Juliana get back? I sent three bottles: Dave’s Insanity Sauce; Endorphin Rush; and Blazin Saddle (her favorite). So, if all three are there, then customs didn’t nab any.

Sorry I wasn’t in Bali when you guys were — I’d have liked to meet her Australian family.

Hi Nick,

Just ran across this posting, and am curious - are you paying 18 million per month!? or per annum for these new digs!?

All the best, and keep up the good work on the site.

Regards,
Engineer
