Scooters in Bali

Nick and I finally had our situation sorted enough to get some scooters to make for easier and quicker transport. At noon we met Mark at Made’s Warung in Seminyak.

After a feed (Nasi Campurs, best I’ve had yet) and a lot of talk (lots of people were coming up to talk, Jason, Rita the singer. Mark has been living in Bali and other parts of Asia for almost 30 years), we finally proceeded to the rental place that Mark uses. Nick and I filled out the paper work and agreed to pay the guy on Monday since the banks were closed today for something. Some folks say it’s for Chinese New Year, another said it is for a ceremony, and still another said banks close on the last day of the month. The end result was no money besides what’s in my pocket till Monday.

Mark graciously took us down some side streets and near the beach where there is virtually no traffic. We were zooming around here and there getting used to acceleration, changing gears, and braking. When we stopped for a drink and meal to thank Mark for his time, Mark was a bit worried about Nick. He said that Nick looks undecisive on the bike. Not a personal slam on Nick, just a fact. While watching, he looks like he may wreck at any time. That in tandem with the drivers around here (they are not safe), had Mark and even me a little bit concerned. We like Nick…we want him around! In a few days, we’ll both be driving with more control and confidence.

Words of warning from the experienced . . . if you see the cops, avoid them or it will cost you. And if you get in an accident & can make a quick getaway, do it without thought! Don’t forget to watch out for stray dogs darting across your path. We got our experience riding through Bali with riding tandem, a surfboard on the side rack, and following secret cow pasture paths to the surf spots down south - and those are some of our best memories. Good luck & be careful!
