Jl. Padma is loaded with tourist industry stuff, hotels, restaurants and bars, not to mention car rental places and convenience stores.
After checking out the Puri Raja hotel on Jl. Padma Utara I stopped into a place called Yut’z Place for a cap cay (steamed veg and rice).
While sitting sipping a watermelon juice the owner Sayuti came in. I recognized her from the gym I go to and we started chatting. Sayuti opened Yut’z Place a year ago and is making a living. Originally from Jember in east Java she has opened 3 different restaurants since being here. Catering to German, Swiss and Australian customers means she has to have their favourites and provide good service.
Sayuti told me she used to own the place across the street which was called Lo’s Warung. She had renovated the shop, created a business with the building owner telling her she could renew the lease. You might be able to guess what happened. After Sayuti’s business was up and running the building owner told her she could not renew her lease….at least not for a small amount. This has happened to her 3 times now and she told me she thinks some Balinese people get jealous when they see a business prospering and use it as a way to jack the rent up. There was a very successful bar on Jl. Legian close to Jl. Double Six called Goa Caf. I visited the place in 1993 when Legian, not Seminyak was the trendy part of town. Goa Caf closed a couple of years ago after the exact same thing happened, the landowner would rather see a good business go under than charge a reasonable rent. But that’s Bali, they don’t stress and hold their ground.
Sayuti said when she found out about the lease not being renewed she had only 3 months to find a new place, renovate it and get it up and running. The place across the street was a Fuji film store so she bought them out and dug up a garden that used to be adjacent. Knocking down a couple of walls gave her the space she needed. In all it took 6 months for the renovation and her staff were kept on half pay as they were trained and valuable.
Sayuti told me she has no time to go to the gym these days as her assistant is on vacation. Unlike most business owners she gives them 12 days a year vacation which they must either take all together or in 2, 6 day blocks.
I asked what the house special was and she said steak with salad and roast potatoes. My cap cay was 15,000rp and filled me up. Tasty too.
Evenings can be busy here and you might have to make a reservation.

Sitting in Internet Outpost later in the day I bumped into Debbie DDLegs from Los Angeles who is leaving tomorrow. She wants to move over to Bali for at least 6 months of the year and had just made a couple of hundred pairs of colorful pants to ship back.
She’s a nice lady, loves the Balinese and I hope to see her out here again.

Hey Mark,
Actually, the expressions on their faces portrayed “Please, don’t shoot!”
But then again, that’s only my quirky sense of humour!
I reckon Pop looks cute! Great set
of choppers!
Actually they all liked having their photos taken. The old guy just showed up and posed for us. The young guy in the front was in about 30 of my photos.
Re the photo of the 3 guys previousley;
A friendly looking bunch i think not.
The guy at the back looks like some mad pill popping machete maniac from the back street slums of jakarta. I mean all three of these guys look like they are about to go into battle or have lost their marbles. ! For once Nick your photos do not portray smiley happy people…makes a change i suppose.
