Housing hunting and moving and have to be 2 of my least favourite activites, in line with job hunting and interviews.
I moved all my stuff into a place on Gang Bima today using my large backpack, daypack and motorbike. It took 5 trips and the amount of junk I have accumulated surprised me. Its mostly work related…hardware, cables, plugs, instruction manuals etc plus a lot of paper work.
Weather today was overcast and I felt like I was living in the tropics packing my stuff, riding over and unpacking again.
The deal with my new place is that its a 2 storey place inside a family compound. The interior is basic, things works but nothing exciting about it. I have rented it for 30 days as a trial. I paid 2m rp for this. If I want to rent for a year the owner has agreed to rent for another 12 months for 18M rp.
The reason I want a month to check things out is firstly I want to see the ‘hidden extras’…noise from Jl. Dhyana Pura, dogs barking, babies crying etc. that I’m just not aware of now. I am also a bit nervous about living next to the landlord. I went through this in Santa Barbara where the guy was right next door and it wasn’t something I’d recommend. This new landlord Mr Wayan is a Balinese Christian, plenty of crosses all over the place. I sense he will take a keen interest in everything that goes on at the house and this next 30 days will give me a chance to see how that works. He seems a decent guy right now and I’m going to withold all conclusions until the end. I’m still looking for another place though and will check out my options.
Lunch today was a tuna sandwich at Cafe Moka and a glass of OJ for 25,000rp. I tell you if you want a decent sandwich Moka isn’t bad! This tuna thing has eggs, tuna, lettuce, tomato in a footlong baguette and was good. Ask for the juice without sugar though, I hate getting a mouthful of sugar that sits at the bottom.
I must say there was a twinge of sadness leaving my old house. It was my first house in Bali was was a decent place to live. I enjoyed particularly having people over, Vincent and Akari plus others and sitting out back getting merry.
I did a ‘Sean like’ last walk around the house before leaving for the last time and discovered my guitar sitting all by itself…whoops!
Just talked to John, the waiter at Bali Corner cafe on Jl. Benesari and Poppies II. This place serves ice cold beer and good sate. I asked him how business was and he told me it was good with plenty of Aussies here right now.
Sitting here at I/O with Charlie Sellers.

Your four least-favorite activities echo mine. Once you get through them, though, the sense of relief is magnified.
The 30 day trial period is a good idea, Nick. Your experience shows. Those *hidden extras* can make or break your home life.
Keep us posted on Mr. Wayan.
Amazing how fast that year on Drupadi went by,hope the new place works out, you don’t want to be moving every few months.
I suggest you go hard at it, partying & having people over all the time, just to swee how far you can push the landlord, before taking it for 12 months! Invite a few females home for dinner etc….
Hee hee hee

i read in one of the ‘naughtiest girl at school’ books as a child, about the girl who when she moved house kissed all four walls in each room of the house she was leaving. As a silly sentimental I’ve continued doing this in every house I’ve moved out of since childhood.
Good luck with your new place Nick. I only have about 6 weeks left and i`ll be there, can`t wait. Can you please tell me where Cafe Moka is? Hope to catch up with you soon. Hay Tracy thanks for all that info l really appreciate it.
Tracey, I think you sound like the “naughtiest girl in school”!! Seriously tho I like your style & Nick should definitely follow your advice.
Angie… I think you might be right! I remember my first week of prep, (only a few years ago!!!) I got into trouble & had to sit on the HOT SEAT! I saw the bigger kids soaking toilet paper & then throwing it really hard up on the roof & it stuck! So I joined in! My Mother was horrified when I took a note home to her! From then on I had my name stuck above the Hot Seat, so I knew where to sit almost daily!
But how embarassing is this….. When I took Maddy to school last week there were 2 teachers that were at the school when I was there (a few years ago!) They said “Wow Maddison, I remember your Mum at this school!!! (a few years ago!) I bet they can’t remember the good girls names! hee hee hee.
I taught the Irish girl to like Vegemite too, but not sure I will explain why or how….! Maybe a few Bintangs & I will devulge more!
I don’t mind being the Naughty Girl!
But Nick, if you really want to know if you will be happy there, you got too push the boundaries now, rather than be there for 5 months & then upset Mr Wayan!!!!
TO ALL PERSONS CURRENTLY IN BALI:- ALNIGHT (NUDE) PARTY AT NICK’s NEW PLACE, STARTS FEB 7th Until 14TH…
ALL WELCOME, BYO FOOD & DRINKS, plenty of room to crash!!!!
PS. I want some photo’s!!!!
G’Day Nick,
Glad to read you made the transition successfully. tracey has the right idea though. Push the boundaries - have a mock Wicca ceremony, then after have a drunken orgy unrivalled by any Roman gig.
Having said that - Beware the Ides of March…THE OWNER!
Tracey, I think we should give Mr Wayan the scare of his life, I can tell he hasn’t done too much partying he looks too healthy. When he met me he asked if I liked to bring girls home. I said of course I’m a guy.
Cool thing is I am ideally situated to look around still for other places.
WHOA, up little fella!
We have not heard about these Girls/Ladies you like to bring home…
Or is it you like to bring them home, but haven’t…YET!???
Yeah, keep looking but show him how the West like to party & see if he kicks you out.
Have you been to the notice wall in Krakatoa? They have lists of places to rent etc..
We need to see a pic of Wayan, maybe he has a nice girl for you????
Good Luck with your new place. Maybe you just need to coop (make that “corrupt”) your LL. When you have that all-night naked Wiccan orgy/keg party, invite a couple of extra wenches, err, witches, and give him a pint class with his name on it.

Nice one Nick…every time I leave a place via travels or moving…I give it a last walk through to see if I forgot anything. The guitar was a good find for sure.
