This evening I was sitting in Internet Outpost getting on with my work when a fellow strode up to the counter and asked for Nick.
I guess I get lucky at these things and manage to be around for most of them. The gentleman’s name was Jeff Burnham and he had recently arrived from Brisbane Australia.
Jeff who is retired has decided to spend a year in Bali teaching English at a local school. What an adventure. I think he’s a smart guy and will have many tales to tell.
Jeff has read articles on Baliblog before and commented on a couple. Once again I told him that when I write this stuff I do it with about half a dozen people in mind and am amazed that other people actually read it.
Jeff gave me a print out which said something about a free beer. I’m good for it and wasted no time in joining him.
We chatted about logistics (the Kuta sidewalks are killing his feet and the cockroaches love his toothpaste) and how he could go about getting a laptop computer. I told Jeff that I’d be interested in visiting his school after he gets set up, I can be the ‘dumb bule’ and Jeff can be the all ‘knowing wiseman’.
Here’s another person pursuing their dream and taking a chance. I like that and will keep you posted as to how Jeff gets on.

Hey Nick,
George Bush is going to be meeting with Megawati on October 22, see if you can get into that tête-à-tête! Oh to be a fly on the wall when those two intellectual giants talk…
I bet she stands him up!!!!
Mega babes does what she likes!. That includes ignoring vsiting dignitaries.
She sould have been in Bali for the memorial service but used the piss-poor excuse that she had to meet some dude from Algeria.
Connsidering most of the island of Bali voted for her in the last election, you’d think she would at last make the effort.
That’s polies for ya!
Dubya & Mega, I reckon a 2 hour long game of Trivial Pursuits will be the highlight of their meeting (World affairs and geography sections removed ).
Josh, next time talk to Jeff I’ll ask him if its okay for me to tell about his contact.
Jeff sounds like an interesting and interested man. Teaching is fun, rewarding and a tremendous learning experience.
Josh, try the internet in your search for teaching positions abroad. Library could be another good resource. I would think you choose the country you want and go from there.
Any info. on how Jeff got set up teaching in Bali? I’m really interested in doing something similar and would love the advise.
Thanks,
Josh
