Baliblog: Can you tell people for example, we used to live in California, and in California things are made to look beautiful. How does that differ?
Jay: Well here it comes from the religion and the spirituality of the people. The ceremonies are often tithing the Gods, the daily ceremonies for the Gods, the daily offerings. Imagine closing a bridge in the west where a beautiful young woman has come out has done an extensive little mini-ceremony, done a little offering to appease the Gods. So that it ensures safe travel for all the people crossing the bridge. Imagine that in Los Angeles at one of these big freeway intersections, someone is going to do a ceremony so you have safe travel through Los Angeles (laughing). It's just not going to happen.
Someone can say 'oh that's just hocus pocus, they are just superstitious people', but if you are open to more than just your rational mind, just cold hard cash and capitalism, those type of things, if you've got any heart left in you in the west, then you can't help but be affected by these things because it creates an energy that says 'there is more to life than just making money, and getting ahead of the Joneses'. Even people who can't articulate what they like about Balinese culture, you meet a lot of people in Australia who say 'oh we just love it, the people are so friendly, we just love 'em'. Well there's reasons for that you know. But it's a great thing and you know things always look rosy when you are new to a place. I'm aware that I have only been to Bali 3 times, and I know the longer you stay reality starts setting in. You start going' Oh, everything is not totally what I cracked its up to be and then after about 6 months you start to get the blues a bit, and after a year hopefully to get a pretty balanced view of things.

Come on a Hoax phone call can shut down a bridge in LA or a subway in NY for hours. It’s not the consequences it’s the intent and the Balines people are a a deeply religous people who enjoy worhipping their Hindu Gods and bless them for that that they can get pesce and harmony from their gods. Christians and Muslims tend to their God in a different fashion with Bombs, Nukes, Gas, Suicide Bombers,Economica and Military might so who are we to deprive the Balinese of pure tradiditional worship. If the traffic is delayed in LA well, thats just 1 scam delayed, 1 murder postponed etc etc so maybe we should stop a moment and learn because if we are so godamm smart why are we living in fear of our lives and our wealth. I applaud the Balinese traditions and am jealous of their purity.
“….for that that they can get pesce and harmony from their gods.”
Where is Marc - the blog’s unofficial spelling and grammar checker - when we need him. Hee..hee..hee…
More I read people’s comment, more I realise that there are more dumber people than me. hee..heee….heee…
“It’s not done because it’s madness. They are ridiculous customs practiced by people with ridiculous beliefs.”
Tony, why are you so negative about everything Bali? But you keep hanging around in this blog. You seem to have love-hate relationship with Bali. Did a Balinese man rape you or something? Ohh…I remember Dr Tim was saying that you might have been molested as a child. I bet that happened when you were growing up in Bali, right?
As a voice in the wilderness once said,” Simple places produce simple minds”.
Religion, well to each their own, as long as it is of the light and not the darkness fine.
I recall Nick writing that once you understand that Bali and its system is about $ then you will move forward as opposed to rationing logic.
Dont mistake purity for justified ignorance.
I think Tony fits in well here, every place in the world has a person like Tony. He gives people something more to talk about other than themselves.
He fits in alright, just like a bot-fly maggot.
i know this blog is outdated now, but i would just like to say one thing though.
these believes can only sound ridiculous when you minimalize religion to small scientific explanation and a means of power and opium for the people.
I can imagine the beautiful young woman thing in LA….
