Name: Putu
Age: 20
Where do you live? (area of Bali and/or Indonesia): Denpasar
How long have you been in Bali?: All my life
What is your job? How long have you worked there?: Waitress at Captain Haddock’s restaurant on Jalan Benesari, Kuta. I’ve worked here for 1 ½ years.
Have you ever left Indonesia? If so, where? If not, would you like to?: No. I think its good to have the chance to go around Indonesia, not abroad. Maybe just Bali because I want to know about Bali more.
What do you like about tourists?: Maybe making a friendship because that’s very nice. They have knowledge and talk about things, places I don’t know about. Its so nice to know about other islands.
What do you dislike about tourists?: Maybe when they complain. Sometimes when they are joking. When I have a big complaint I think I’m true, but here the guest is king.
How did the bombing of the Sari Club and its after-effects affect your job and life?: Of course that affect me and my family because they all work in tourism. That’s not a good effect for me, tourism very low.
What is your favorite part of Bali?: Not here, I don’t like it. Maybe in the village. Bangli or Klungkung.
What is your least favorite part of Bali? Everything is good here. I have good pleasure. Everything is good for me.
What would you like to see happen in Bali during the next 5 years?: Many tourists come to Bali, everything is good in Bali.
Do you think Nike practices unfair labor practices in Indonesia?: I don’t know.
What advice would you like to pass on to folks that are coming to Bali soon?: Welcome to Bali and I hope you enjoy your visit to Bali.
Any other thoughts that you might like to pass on to the world?: The people who never come to Bali, you must come because Bali has too many interesting places that are different from the other countries.

Nick, what a delightful, refreshing and honest interview with Putu. I found it quite interesting that even though she has lived in Bali all her life, she still doesn’t know all of it. I was pleased to see you ask her about Nike!. I don’t know about you, but I find the ideas and practices of multi-nationals utilising third world labour quite distasteful. They should pay them a decent wage for the hours of toil they put in.
