Bali / Lombok travel tips from Kris Wallis

Surfer Kris Wallis shares his thoughts and gives a few tips for people visiting Bali and Lombok.

“Bali Kiss” what I learned on my first trip to Bali

Going out in Bali is a waste of time, Bintang is a light beer, spirits are a rip off, you will drink yourself sober at most bars. Most bars and clubs are full of hookers who are reasonably priced and trustworthy from all accounts. However if you are looking for western women try your home town. If you are there for more than two weeks you will end up on a motorbike. You should be able to get one for 30,000 per day w/ insurance and a helmet provided you are hiring for more than a few days. If you plan to go to Lombok either book a flight early with Merpati (really early) or take your own bike hired from Kuta.

The boat trip is extremely long and boring i.e a waste of your holiday. If you have to go on the boat you can hire crew rooms for 35,000. Dont let anyone carry your bags. Drivers wont take you to Kuta Lombok at night apparently due to dangers although I have no idea whether this is legit or just a ploy to get you to stay in Mataram. Always carry cash for police. Again a bike hired in Kuta Bali will come with helmet unlike mine which cost me 70,000 because I didn’t have one. Dont burn your leg on the exhaust, almost everyone I met had including experienced riders. Burns get infected easily and can stop you surfing.

Senggigi sucks.

With people like you in Bali they don’t need terrorists. You obviously don’t belong on this wonderful island paradise and I for one hope you have gotten your sore arse out of there before I get there in 12 days.

Well now you have all of that off your chest I hope you go home from whence came and never darken Bali’s doorstep again.
I very much hope that you have left before I get to the Paradise Island in 12 days time.

Kez OR Kerry (i take it your the same person)

The person called Kris must have hit a raw nerve with you as you have posted X4.. or am i mistaken and Kez and Kerry are two different persons. If so apoligies if not, well i suppose your entitled to your opinion no matter how may times and different ways you wish to present it.

Going out to deliberately get drunk and have indiscriminate sex doesn’t appeal to me, but we’re all different aren’t we?

Hi Mark - Yes Kez and Kerry are one person, my computer was playing up and I didn’t think anything actually went.
I really don’t like people who only see the bad side of a place or other people, there are always 2 sides as most of us know. It isn’t all roses in Bali but it is a hell of a lot better than a lot of places around the world and the people are by and large friendly, trustworthy and open.

Can anyone help me please. We are moving to Lovina next year and I need education for my 11 year old son. The International School at DPS is too far away. Any ideas on Home tuition, costs etc. Thanking you in anticipation.

I’m sorry if my post seemed negative I just wanted to point out some of the pitfalls I encountered. I loved Bali I just found that the nightlife was average and that it led to me going to bed early and spending more time surfing. The boat trip to Lombok is long, slow and if I could have got a flight I would have. There is nothing in Senggigi except bars and hotels, the sand is grey like Kuta and it is expensive. Kuta Lombok has crystal clear water, white sandy beaches and is very cheap.
