Name: Herman
Age: 25
From:
Bali
Occupation:
Musical instrument seller
How long in Bali: 25 years

Jl. Majapahit round the back of Jl. Legian has a stack of handicrafts and I chatted with Herman at a drum shop. Herman’s mate was sitting out front playing a drum, so he’s the one in the photo.

These guys had all kinds of drums, rattle, didgeridoos and painted geckos. Some of the drums were quite big and I could tell they were all recently made because the skin was still pale. All drums have slightly different sound, but the older ones sound better. Larger drums were carved and I saw others which were uncarved, waiting to be finished.

Guntur Shop labels itself ‘wholesale exporter facturer of musical instruments’. They have been at the same location for 10 years, so they must be doing something right.
