Interview with Buhan: Artist in Seminyak Bali

While walking along Jl. Oberoi 2 days ago I a guy painting a picture, sitting close to the street. The small shop was called Syah. Stopping and saying hello he stopped working for a second and I saw he was painting an exact replica of a picture on a postcard. Man these guys have talent coming out of their ears! For people wanting to decorate their house or apartment, Seminyak offers many small art shops, where the original artist displays and sells his work. Of course Ubud is considered the arts center of Bali and its the same there. I know a lady who owns a shop on Poppies II selling ‘wave paintings’ by her husband. He has a a few basic designs and cranks them out. It is impressive though, to see people who are skilled with the brush. I’m sure if you showed up with a small picture you wanted amde into a larger painting they could handle it.

This young artist, Buhan from Java, would not tell me the prices, he was just a ‘hired brush’ so to speak. Here is the short interview we did.

Hi Nick,

That was great to hear your voice, makes me feel homesick for Bali!! I have looked at the paintings at Syah. They are not expensive, ranging from 150,000rp for the smallest to around 450,000rp. They do nice work. Thanks for the interview, looking forward to hearing more of that lovely Indonesian accent.
