What do you get when you live in an earthquake zone? Earthquakes!!! Indonesia had a big one today in west Sumatra and according to the BBC, 70 people are dead. Its kind of like when people who live in a flood plain, complain about getting flooded, its only a matter of time.

Upon arriving in Padang, we got a local bus to Buktitinggi up a little way in the hills. We arrived at about 11pm and iimmedaitely checked into a losman (cheap hotel) for 8,000rp, about $4. A letter from Sumatra: 1993-part I

My brother Chris suprised me this afternoon by pulling out a letter I had written him back in 1993. It was sent from Lake Meninjau on the coast of Sumatra. I was travelling through Indonesia with an American friend Mark and we were having the time of our lives. Here is what I wrote.

As most of you know, I am a Yogyakarta man at heart and as such love the variety of food available there. Oddly enough though, the food I most often eat in Yogyakarta is Nasi Padang!.
