Seminyak Villas

By Nick | November 12th, 2007 | 1 Comment »

Seminyak is the place in Bali you could call ‘expat homebase’. Reasons for this are obvious, its close to the airport, close to the beach, shopping, restaurants, nightlife and far enough away from Kuta and the package tourist scene to be bearable.

Road rage in Bali

By Nick | December 30th, 2006 | Add a Comment »

Road rage always seemed to me a pretty childish thing, something I’d never secumb to. Over the last week however I’ve been getting closer to the line. All over the Kuta, Legian, Seminyak area, larger roadworks are going, creating bottlenecks on 2 lane streets. This backs traffic up to the previous junction, which blocks the [...]

Jl. Seminyak: The main street where I live in Bali

By Nick | December 15th, 2006 | Add a Comment »

Stepping out of my gang (alley) in Seminyak gets me onto a busy street called Jl. Seminyak. This street isn’t that wide, the actual road is only about 10 meters, but it recieves a lot of traffic, at certain times of the day. Fifteen years ago, Jl. ‘Nyepi‘ day, the Icaka New Year, the day of absolute silence, no activity is done, no amusement is held, no fire is lit along the day & night. The day of fasting & self-introspecting, the entire island is just like being deserted during the day.
For people not familiar with the ceremonial schedule in Bali, [...]

Ocha’s Indonesian food Seminyak Bali

By Nick | September 4th, 2006 | 3 Comments »

For the last 2 weeks, I have been hitting a little place for lunch every day. Each warung has its own slightly different style, sometimes the rendang is generous, but the sauce is weak, other times the sauce is great but the portions small. Ocha’s, formerly Warung Roadkill, is hitting the spot right now.

Indonesian furniture set to take of in India

By Nick | May 26th, 2006 | 1 Comment »

Indonesian made furniture is set to take India by storm. The reasons for this are the selection of materials used from teak, bamboo, rattan and others. The second reason is Indonesia has a wealth of skilled carpenters and craftsmen (and women).

Spaghetti Jazz is still open in Seminyak. The other day I said the Italian restaurant, across from Bintang supermarket on Jl. Seminyak was closed, but that’s wrong.
