A train crash in Surabaya Java has killed at least 13 people today. Two trains heading in the same direction collided around 2am.

Mt. Merapi located in Central Java is giving indications of a possible eruption. Merapi is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and last exploded in 1994, killing 43 people. An eruption won’t directly affect Bali, but will affect Yogyakarta which is only a short distance away.

The anti-pornography bill has stirred the blood of Balinese people because of the direction it is coming from, Muslim Java. One voice of calm was Muslim cleric, Mustofa Bisri, who represents 40 million Muslims. Bisri said ” “The House should accommodate as many people’s aspirations as possible,” referring to the mulit-cultural make up of Indonesia.


 

Minister of religion jailed in Indonesia

A former Minister of Religion has been jailed for 5 years in Jakarta. Said Agil Munawar served as Indonesia’s Minister of Religion from 1999 to 2004. During that time he embezzled $76 in funds designated to help Muslims attend the hajj in Mecca.
