Six members of the Bali Nine heroin smuggling gang are appealing their death sentences at the Constitutional Court in Jakarta. What seemed like a ‘hail-Mary‘ to some people, has turned into an extremely important legal debate for Indonesia as a whole.

Australian legal expert Philip Alston has argued that the Bali Nine drug smuggling gang should not be executed. Mr. Alston, an international law expert, testifying in Jakarta at the Constitutional Court, said the Bali Nine members were guilty of a serious crime, but did not literally kill anybody.

Bali Nine members: No luck with appeal

Three members of the Bali Nine drug smuggling gang, had no luck with Indonesia’s Constitutional Appeals Court. Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran and Scott Rush were attempting to get their death sentences ruled illegal, as the Indonesian constitution acknowledges the ‘right to life’.

Australian Michelle Condon, 35, from Port Melbourne, is still in jail in Bali, awaiting her trial for possession of methamphetamine. There are variations of this drug, but all amount to the same thing, addiction.
