Tucking into Demon Repellant Yummies

It is not very often that you come across a warung that has it all. One such surprise can be found down Poppies Lane 1. Candika spotted the place, and of course I went along in my usual role of epicurean advisor to her stomach.

The Bali Asi is a large open-air warung that is extremely clean, well set out with a bar at one end for those who like to drown their tongues. Attentive service is a big plus for this place, as is the variety of ‘world music’ they play over the sound system. It makes a pleasant change from the head-banging music so prevalent in a lot of restorans.

The menu is simple, but the choices excellent. There is a good selection of Chinese food as well as Indonesian food. However, the fresh seafood section seemed the most appealing. Seafood that is cooked in every imaginable fashion and just reading the list had me licking my lips!. There are also ‘daily specials’ that are budget traveller affordable. In fact, the whole menu is excellent for those with a tight purse string!.

I adore any food cooked with a decent amount of Garlic. Jokingly, I told Candika that Garlic was a great repellant for Werewolfs and Vampires, and od course most Silver Screen baddies. After trying to explain the likes of Boris Karloff and Peter Cushing to her, Candika had an overwhelming urge to devour clove after clove of Garlic!.

Candika ordered a Tuna Sandwich with Salad (Rp8,500), and asked for Garlic!. It was a ripper sanger!. This wasn’t tuna from a can, but rather chunks of tuna with a mayonaise dressing mixed with finely chopped shallots. The salad was very crispy and extremely fresh. An added bonus of a serving of french potatoes was a delight for Candika. She’s a ‘Chippie lover’ at heart!.

Back on the fish trail, I couldn’t resist the magical combination. A Grilled Tuna Steak with Garlic (Rp15,000) was the obvious choice. The tuna steak was thick. So much so, you could have used it as a doorstop!. It was grilled slowly over hot coals and constantly brushed with crushed garlic. Totally and absolutely delicious!. The tuna steak was served with fresh salad and chips. What most impressed my pallet was the addition of a large spoonful of fresh crushed garlic. Guaranteed to knock the socks of Boris and the lads!.

Atmosphere: Very Pleasant
Food Quality: Above Average
Service: Attentive
Rating: 6.5

The Bali Asi is conveniently located close to the beach and a short distance from Bemo Corner. The restoran is ideal for a relaxing feast, or just a drink and a natter. Recommended for Budget Travellers.

Barrie, where was I when this feasting was going on. I almost ate the computer reading your description. That’s it, I’ve had enough of the Padang food, I’m heading to Bal Asi.
