Cruising northwards in our gastronomical pursuit, Candika and I found an old favourite of mine that has been re-vamped and looking better than ever.
I remember the Legend restoran from the 1990’s when it was a great place to go for breakfast, and in fact, any other time. Then, it was a reasonably small warung popular with tourists and backpackers alike because of the affordable and tasty tucker. Now, the Legend has had an incredible makeover to become a fairly classy restoran.
The restoran is open-air with a Balinese panache that oozes comfortable dining. The tables and chairs are placed under small palm trees giving it a natural affect. There are fish ponds conveniently placed complete with Koi fish, carved stone statues, and even a small shrine. At the rear of the restoran is a small pavillion for those who prefer undercover dining, and in between, a small dance floor which is no doubt filled with merry tourists when the restoran has one of its many ‘theme’ nights complete with music. There is also a quaint bar where you can sit and just enjoy a drink or two.
I was particularly impressed with the out-going friendliness of the polite staff. They all wore traditional dress adding to the Balinese atmosphere. I was surprised to see small lanterns on each table instead of candles for lighting. Very delightful!. The menu was different to the norm. Apart from the usual sections of Pizza, Spaghetti, Pasta, Sandwiches and Burgers, there were special sections each titled accordingly: From the Ocean, From the Farm, Local Talent, and Oriental Tastes. Quite original I thought!.

“From the Ocean’ was our choice for the night, and all of which were Balinese dishes. Candika ordered PEPES IKAN UDANG (Rp30,000). A selection of fish and prawns coated in Balinese spices, then wrapped in a banana leaf and grilled over hot charcoals. Candika was pleasantly surprised and commented on the soft texture of the seafood and the spices as being unbelievably tasty. The fish and prawns were served on a fresh banana leaf with a small side salad and two small dishes of Sambal.
My selection was IKAN BAKAR SAMBAL LEMO (Rp30,000). Charcoal grilled Snapper stuffed with vegetables and chilli’s with Lime juice, then slowly grilled on hot charcoals. The meal was served on a fresh banana leaf with a crispy side salad. The fish was cooked to perfection, and I was impressed to find the backbone of the fish removed to allow easier access to the soft flesh of the fish. It was spicy but not too hot (but hot enough!). A tasty dish recommended for lovers of Fish!.

Although this restoran might be out of the budget travellers reach, it would be well worth the splurge to devour some great tucker. I would HIGHLY recommend the Legend Restoran to anybody wanting an enjoyable night of dining in a beautiful setting.

Hi Barrie,
I’ve been enjoying your restaurant reviews so much. Thanks for the effort you are going to. I just have to comment on todays report, I remember the 10 000 Rup “all you can eat breakfast” at Legends. We went there for this on numerous occasions and I remember those huge bright purple chairs outside……. hmmmm very stylish. I was glad to see that they had changed their decor when I was in Bali last August.
Cheers & keep those reports coming.
Ann
