Tonight I’d thought I would revisit one of the restorans I reviewed last year. I had passed the place several times since returning to Bali and noticed the new facelift.
The Maxi Garden Restoran is centrally located on Jalan Legian opposite the new Paddy’s night club. The alfresco dining area has had a revamp in the form of a patio cover and, with the addition of a few potted palms and redesigned seating arrangements. The extra bonus is that they have live music courtesy of the local guitarist, Michael, who strums his stuff admirably belting out some cool tunes. What I liked was the amplifiers weren’t wound up to peak zone enabling dining a pleasant experience.
The menu has been revamped also with a superb choice of Seafood, Mexican, Italian, and a fantastic Asian dishes selection. Ya gotta check out the pizza list!. The prices are on par with most places selling pizzas but I reckon they have the edge over the competition. The Maxi Garden is also open for breakfast. Another new addition geared towards the toursit market is the sandwich bar. Super-clean and impressive, you can choose the choice of fillings and, whether you want a bread roll or sliced bread. What I liked was the choice of breads, or my favourite - Rye bread.
Perusing the extensive menu made it hard to choose a bit of tucker. In the end, I chose Pepes Ikan. A delicious thick slice of fish slowly grilled with Balinese spices and served with local vegetables and nasih putih. Now I gotta tell ya, Pepes Ikan is one of my favourite dishes in Indonesia and believe me, the one I had tonight would be hard to top. The fish was cooked to perfection and very spicy. I think it was the chilli’s that relined the inside of my throat but it was superb.
Candika was adventurous tonight and chose the Ayam Panggang Gianyar. What seemed to me to be a half-chook beautifully grilled and layered with a Balinese spicy sauce then served with local vegetables and nasih putih. The chook never stood a chance and was soon devoured. Candika gave it the thumbs up and licked her lips.
Pepes Ikan: Rp29,000
Ayam Panggang Gianyar: Rp27,000
The Maxi Garden is open early for breakfasts and then right through until late for those diners who like their nosh in the cool of the late evening. This is a restoran that I will be returning to and I fully reccommend it to anyone.
