The word Bukit means hill in Indonesian. At the bottom of Bali is a peninsula, an upside down mushroom shaped chunk of land that rises steeply to a plateau. This is the Bukit, as it is called in Bali. The scenery here differs greatly from other parts of Bali because it is arid and the land is brown dirt covered with patchy scrub. You will not see rice fields down on the Bukit, but rather cattle grazing in the afternoon heat. Traditionally sparse in population, the Bukit is lucky to be the area that surfers prefer and a surfing support system complete with guesthouses, surfer board rental and warungs has sprung up on the western side. On the eastern side of the Bukit is the Nusa Dua resort, which is a Beverly Hills type place of resorts that are connected into one long strip. Hiking down a trail on the southern side of the Bukit you will find white sand coves totally unspoiled and empty.
In recent years expats have built small independent hotels and guest-house overlooking Dreamland, Balangan, Bingin and other places. For people wanting to build a house in an area with plenty of space, with a view of the ocean and easy access to the surf, look no further than the Bukit.
