Ubud is 12 miles from Kuta, as the crow flies, that is. Unfortunately the traffic doesn't follow that pattern so a trip to Ubud will take you at least and hour, depending on which route you take.
Today I took a route which meandered more than usual, but which afforded wonderful views and a total picture of Bali for most of the way. The whole time I was riding I was thinking 'Imagine how much a visitor to Bali would love to see this route, its photo gallery all the way.'
I passed a temple ceremony, a large thatched rice shed in one village, locals going about their daily work and all the elements, roosters in their cages and rice fields that you can imagine.
So where is this route? Quite simple really, I took Jl. Raya Kerobokan north past. At the main road at Sempidi I turned left in the direction of Tabanan and turned of right for Mengwi. My route immediately got more pleasant from here as I didn't have to deal with the traffic on the main road anymore. Taking a right turn in the direction of Sangeh, but turning off towards Mambal and continuing to Sayan, I swung through some lovely little tree covered lanes that were not at all busy, but presented an image of Balinese life. The last part of my ride saw me drive north past Sayan and around through Sanggingan and Campuhan, before swinging down the main street in Ubud. When I get a bigger bike I would love to show other people this ride sometime.
