Stopping at Sukawati market Bali

The ride home from the Neka Art Museum was enjoyable and I decided to take a slightly different route this time and swing through Sukawati.

This town has a market, or rather 3 markets, one for fruit and veg, one for clothes and sarongs and one for jewelry. Barrie first took me there last year and after getting a bit more knowledge on the items being sold I wanted to take another quick look.

As soon as I pulled up on my motorbike one older man came over offering jewelry. “Maybe better you try a woman or those domestic tourists over there.” I said. This lady really wanted me to buy something from her too.

Across the street I browsed the market area for ceremonial goods. I don’t do much in the way of ceremonies so didn’t buy anything. I’m thinking in the near future I’d like to pick up some nice gear for a wedding, not mine, the ones I’ll get invited to down the line.

You can definitely bargain here and I made some playful bargaining with one lady for a blanket. The price went from 50,000rp to 15,000rp in about 30 seconds. If you want large quantities of cheap sarongs and t-shirts Sukawati might be for you.

Whoa, prices are really inflated - from 50,000 to 15,000rp in 1/2 a minute!

“This lady” photo had her head full.

G’Day Nick,

At least you didn’t get lost in the market this time!. Actually folks, Candika and I couldn’t find Nick in the cacophony and had to use the mobile to locate him!.

Ceremonial gear eh Nick. Hmmm.

A couple of posers here for everybody:
1. Who remembers the Do Drop Inn on Jl Legian. it was situated between Jl Padma & Jl Melasti and served the best tucker in town at one time.
2. Does anybody know where PURI ANGGREK is located in Bali. I was perusing some old fotos last night, and in 1989 I visited this place but failed to write it up in my notes.
It has about 2 acres of Orchid gardens at the rear of the house.

Bazza,
I can recall a place called Do Drop In!

I have seen a sign Ouri Anggrek, is it the Orchid Farm heading toward Sanur I think?

If anyone can get their hand on vloume 1 &2 of Fred B Eiseman’s books Sekala & Niskala, I’d really like to grab one of each, as they have it here in Melb in Library, but not in any of the book stores near me… I am also interested in reading a book called Fragrant rice by Janet De Neefe (?)
I cannot find either for sale near me, please let me know if anyone can get their hands on copie/s!

Hi Tracey,

It’s a long shot but try the NUSANTARA BOOKSHOP in Darwin. They are on the net (I think!) but they handle all manner of Indonesian literature.

I seem to recollect, after searching my memory banks, that the Puri Anggrek is somewhere in the Holy Land. Thanks anyway Tracey. I will check that place out.

Tracey,

Didn’t know there was a Nusantara in Melb!. I have always obtained my ‘hard to get books’ from Darwin.

Cheers Tracey for asking Gede. How’s he going at work etc?. I’ be interested to know how he is going to handle a cold and windy winter in wet Melb!

Do Drop Inn at 373 Legian St was a longtime favourite. The Pottery business gradually took over and the restaurant was not so profitable any more.

Suzi & Billy have been married, for some years and live at the back, through the Pottery entrance. Suzi (Mevasita) still runs Sita Fashions for Jewellery also.

A pity this watering hole had to close.

Peter.
