Seniwati Gallery of Art by Women: Ubud Bali

Balinese art seems to be dominated by male artists, with names such as Nyoman Lempad, Nyoman Mundik and Ida Bagus Rai.

Balinese women are often seen in idyllic paintings but are rarely the painters. The Seniwati Gallery of Art by Women, in Ubud features works by Balinese women. Set up by expat Mary Northmore for the purpose of giving women’s art a
showcase. The gallery is located on Jl. Sriwedari, off of Jl. Raya Ubud. and features the work of Balinese women and around 40 expat women.

Exhibits take a visitor through the whole range of Balinese art with Kasaman style painting from Ni Made Suciarmi, who painted in the 1930’s. Other famous Balinese women artists on display include Gusti Ayu Suartini, Tjok Istri Mas Astiti and Wayan Warti. Styles range from Walter Spies influenced landscapes, to traditional village scenes, to figures of locals and dancers.

Seniwati Gallery of Art by Women is open daily from 9am-5pm. There is no charge.
