Security in Seminyak

With the recent upgrading of travel warnings against Indonesia, high profile places such as Ku De Ta in Seminyak have stepped up security. Ku De Ta alreay had satpams with handheld metal detectors and mirrors on poles to look under cars, but they have added a new element. Walking past yesterday I noticed a young looking police officer, probably no more that 18, standing chatting up a girl swinging a machine pistol. As I walked past it pointed at me and I said “Can you point that thing at her?”, which he did, both of them laughing.

Close proximity to the barrell of a loaded gun makes me more nervous than a bomb threat. At least diners have the feeling they are safe, even though anyone can walk in from the beach without much of a struggle.

Bintang supermarket has a couple of security guys there the whole time at the entrance as does Matahari department store. Its funny because I walk up, they scan me, the buzzer goes off, then they say “Okay you go.”

The increased police visibilty is suppose to reassure bules that everything is under control.
I feel the exact opposite. Those machine guns scare the hell out of me !

Yes Ku de Ta is probably one of the only places that have adequate security.

In other areas such as Jl oberoi, dynapura, de ja vu nothing has changed and given that a small bomb has a range of 20 to 50 m I would definitely avoid these places. Notice that nothing has happened with respect to checkpoints in these areas or any increased police presence. It will probably take another bomb for action to finally be taken . But by then it will probably be too late…. Well what can one expect in Indonesia!

I was in Bali a couple of weeks before the last bombings. I spent many fun nights in Santa Fe, Seminyak. Following the bombings at Jimbarun, I heard that Seminyak was also meant to have been targeted. My guess is it may well have been Santa Fe. Not sure if I would go in there again now. Shame, as I just loved the girls “working” there.
