The last couple of nights I have taken a short ride around the Ubud area and beyond to get an idea of the place at night. Outside of downtown its dead quiet, rice fields, curving little lanes and banyan trees dangling their vines from high above. Tonight I rode west from Jl. Raya Ubud towards Campuhan, then turned sharp left up the hill towards Penestenan. The narrows streets were mostly empty apart form a few local boys sitting around and socializing. Just after Penestenan is a curvy downhill section lined by steep banks, the whole route is tree lined with banyan trees, a scene right out of Hansel and Gretel.
A short ways later the route flattened out to reveal tranquil rice fields, with the moonlight shining on them. I was riding fairly slowly and the evening air was pleasantly cool, my single t-shirt sufficient.
Coming up to the main north-south road at Sayan I turned around and headed back. I will say once again that the Ubud area really has a lot to offer and I put equal to East Bali as my favorite place.

Art, Thanks for the tip! I must say that the quality, frequency and intensity of the religious arts in Ubud is breathtaking. On my first night I saw a ceremony at the bottom of Jl. Hanoman where the performers had great costumes. The family temples here are amazing and the temple dances seem to be on all the time.
Nick, Among the Ubud night-time attractions is the new Banjar Sambuhan Kecak on Jl Suweta. Begun by Ketut, of Ketut’s Place, 40 Jl Suweta, (Ketut is also head of Banjar Sambuhan,) this Kecak has only been performed about 15 times. Costumes are new, Ramayana dancers are athletic, Kecak dancers are enthusiastic and the proceeds are to restore the Banjar’s temple. Performances are Thursday and Sunday at 1930. My wife and I have only been watching Kecaks for three years, but we think this is the best we have seen. Take a look some night when you are roaming the Ubud countryside.
