The modern age tourist industry in Bali really started on Kuta beach. In the early 70’s there wasn’t much going on except local warungs, losmen (guest houses), surfers and backpackers. Kuta was its own village and when you said you where going to Legian, that was another village.
Poppies Lane I & II were just sandy tracks to the beach and don’t even think about getting western food. Three of the earliest warungs to change that were Kubu Krisna, owned by Jean from TJ’s, Made’s Warung and Poppies Restaurant.
Poppies in located on Poppies Lane I close to Jl. Legian. The lane is very narrow at that point and you can get to Poppies either from Jl. Legian or by taking the small alley next to Made’s Warung. Poppies nowadays is a more upmarket place, serving good food with a very nice relaxing atmosphere. The best mie goreng (fried noodles) I’ve ever had was in Poppies Restaurant.
Poppies Restaurant serves Indonesian and western food. There are 2 more restaurants under the same umbrella, Kopi Pot on Jl. Legian in Legian and Strawberry Hill in Bedugal. Kopi Pot is a nice place for breakfast as you sit outside and watch the world go by. They also have a street side bar, ideal for that late afternoon beer.

Poppies is always my last evening’s meal in Bali before going home. Bob is right on–food quality and service are not lacking, even in these bombing times.
First went to Poppies in 1979. Was one of the only restaurants with a western toilet. Back then the food was great and I always had my favourite - Beef Curry - it was and still is excellent. Have been back to Bali a few times in the last 10 years with my family and we always go to Poppies. It seems like nothing has changed and the atmosphere whether at lunch or dinner is great. And my beef curry is still sensational. Came back from a few weeks in bali in May and Poppies was our favourite restaurant. We spent our last night at Poppies before we flew home to Australia. My husbands favourite is the Pepper Steak, and a great entree is Prawn and Seafood Cocktail - Yum. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.
I remember the days when you could not get a table at Poppies unless you had a prior booking. Sadly as Bali lurches from one crisis to the next, this has not been the case for several years. However the quality of the food and service has not diminished. Still one of the best “up market” value for money restaurant in Bali. Always go for a meal there when we are in Bali.
