Snaking the Break: Developer grabs surf spot in Java

Surfing is supposed to be about appreciating the outdoors, being one with nature and letting go of those greedy human tendencies. Well in theory anyway. I know in practice it does not always work out like that. Surfers get upset when someone drops in and steals their wave. This can get quite passionate at times. At least everyone always had the chance to get waves though.

Indonesia along with Hawaii is the best surfing area in the world. The best part of Indonesia for surfing is the Mentawai Islands off of Sumatra, big waves, and few people. Can you imagine the nerve of somebody trying to block other people from surfing one of Indonesias great breaks? Well a guy from Australia has signed a deal with the local government that give his surf camp exclusive use of Panaitan Island off the southwest tip of Java. The island is part of a National Park. We are not just talking about the land, but the waves too. Other surfers were told recently by Park Rangers that they would be shot if they surfed at Panaitan Island. That’s some serious bribing and some serious heavy handedness.

They say that humans are the only creatures that will deprive other members of their species food, whether they need it or not. This guy seems to follow that trend.
