Taking a flight later in the day from Bali to Singapore meant I did not have to transit through Jakarta. The 3 and a half hour flight was was full. As I have said before, if you are planning to go to Singapore on Garuda, book early. At Canggi airport in Singapore, in between immigration and customs, is a bank of phones and moneychangers. My cell phone from Bali won't work in Singapore so when I land I buy a phone card from the airport moneychangers. They all sell them and the denominations go $10, $20, and $50. A $10 card is good enough for my needs and easy to use. There are basically 2 kinds of cards, Red and Green. I got the Red, which means at the airport I have to use the red phone, pretty simple. Outside the airport I can use the card in any insertable card phone, except the green phones.
Being used to a cell phone and sms, it seems weird to have to mess around with public phones again. You can't sms, can't leave a message and if you make an appointment and miss the person, you have no way of contacting them. Makes me wonder how we ever managed without cell phones, or phones at all.
Singapore numbers start with 65 but to dial a cell phone you just dial the 8-digit number.
