North Bali why would you go there?

North Bali was the point of arrival for tourist in the 1920’s and 1930’s. They would arrive by steamship usually from Jakarta, looking for that ‘new found paradise’ talked about in some of the travel books and magazines of the time.

Since the tourist explosion in the 1970’s and 1980’s, Kuta and the south of the island have been centered for tourism. North Bali has things worth seeing. For starters, Lovina, a section of coastline several kilometers west of Singaraja, has been developed. Lovina is made up of Kaliasem, Kalibukbuk, Banyualit, Anturan, Tukad Munga and Pemaron. The center is Kalibukbuk with restaurants, hotels and places to have a drink.

On many occasions I’ve stayed in Lovina. I found a decent place called Nirvana located at the beach right in the center of Kalibukbuk. Looking at a map of Lovina, you can see how the coastal road swings away from the coast. I would recommend that you choose a hotel on a section of the coast where the road is not close to the beach, if peace and quiet are a priority.

Lovina has also suffered at the down turn of Bali’s tourist economy. Depends what you want, but we find it very quiet and peacfull. The local boys still play beach soccer in front of the Spice Cafe every night. Its a clean black sand beach and the sunsets viewed while sitting at the Sea Breeze Cafe. Last week we spent a few nights up there as is our habit when we first arrive in Bali and you could count on one hand the number of tourists in the various clubs.
My wife found a resteraunt write up in the Bali advertiser about Kubu langlan.
Excellent tucker and cheap too. Would be the best food that we have found in Lovina.
