No live Dolphins but the food is Great

It is always refreshing to find a restoran that does not hang with the norm. Down on the Yellow Brick Road Candika and I found such a restoran.

The Dolphin Bar & Restoran is a bright and pleasant restoran. Its decor theme is Dolphins and the blue sea. This is reflected in the delightful ocean murals on the walls, and the owner has continued the ‘Blue’ theme throughout and right down to the blue gingham tablecloths. The restoran is roomy. A second larger floor enables diners to enjoy the ocean breeze, and watch the activity in the street below. Candika and I were sat on the bottom level and we copped a lovely breeze off the ocean!.

I can remember when the Dolphin Restoran first opened. Back then, it gained quite a reputation as a great place to eat and have a drink. Things haven’t changed, and this was noticeable by the amount of people entering the restoran. Each of them greeted warmly by the polite and attentive staff.

The menu is restrictively simple. A great idea in my opnion. It allows the customer to make a quick and easy choice instead of being bogged down with countless choices. Candika and I both headed for the Indonesian section, but her eyes quickly changed direction when she spotted a couple of Thai dishes. Somehow I think she’s giving me a hint that she wants to check out Thailand!.

Jl Sahadewa, Legian

I warned Candika three times about the dish she chose before ordering. Most travellers to Thailand will know of the ‘killer soup’, but Candika was adamant. The waiter even gave Candika a weird look when she ordered TOM YAN KUNG (Rp12,000). A very spicy and very hot soup containing ginger, onions, and a bumbu called SERAI which of course you don’t eat. Candika was glad of the Nasih Putih she ordered. She said “It helped.” After Candika finished the soup, she emptied her full glass of iced tea as well as most of mine!.

Yours truly was less adventurous!. I selected IKAN PEPES UDANG (Rp27,000). Fish and prawns with chilli’s, vegetables and bumbu Bali, then wrapped in a banana leaf and grilled over hot charcoals. A serving of Nasih Putih helped fill the stomach as I found the portion of Pepes Ikan far too small a serve. However, it was tasty but not spicy enough.

Barrie,
Does Dolphin still have a Leather shop incorporated into it, I believe (from Memory) it was ground level and kind of next door???
I am busily grabbing last minute bit’s & pieces as I also have a busy workload at the moment & not much time to do last minute shopping before the flight..

Hi Tracey,

Not long eh mate and you will be in paradise!. Hey, you’ve waited long enough!. How’s Pedro?.

To your question Tracey. From my memory I can recall a small leather shop next door to the Dolphin. Actually you will be surprised with Jl Sahadewa as it is now. There are several leather shops on the street. In fact they are everywhere in Kuta/Legian as you know. Just around the corner of Poppies Lane 2 on Jl Legian there are a bunch of guys who seem to be okay. I am not into leather (Nick, leave that one alone!) but if you are happy with the one on Jl Sahadewa then stick to it mate.

Barrie,
I am also not into leather…..But friends of mine bought a heap from Dolphin years ago & even after they left, they faxed through orders & I gave their credit card numbers & then I had more friends coming over to visit & they’d take the leather back. Everyone seemed pleased with their goods!!!
Pedro is Godd, looking forward to Bali too, but has now met a young lady & they have been spending alot of time together, she is working here from Sumatra… I think he might not want to leave her!!!!!”LOVE”
Yep 15 days now & counting!!!!! See you then!
