Walking down Jl. Seminyak in the direction of Kuta you will pass shop after shop selling beads, paintings, clothes and other items aimed at tourists. Some of the places have interesting stuff, such as the antiques from all over Indonesia. I stopped into a place called Mustadji Shoes on the left side of the road and talked to the staff. These guys manufacture all kinds of sandals and other footwear and can do made to order items. Their factory and head office are in Tuban. Spotting a rack of sandals I picked up one and said to the staff "Good for beating my wife!"
The sandals were made of bamboo matting and an old tire, quite ingenious and tough with it. The price of the sandals was 450,000rp, which is expensive in my book. Hey if they last 5 years then okay, but I want to know that.

450,000rp is expensive for flip flops. These ones are very heavy and solid though. I tried one out on my thigh and it srung for a ages, definitely a good ‘beater’. Reminds me of my school days where every teacher had his own favourite beating tool (stick, shoe, bat etc.).
Another place I’ve seen these shoes is Komodo, the small trendy shop on Jl. Pantai Kuta.
G’Day Nick,
Geez mate, Rp450,000 is a bit over the top!. That’s a lot of meals. Candika would have done a hustle on the guy and got ‘em down to Rp50,000 I reckon.
The old tyre bit reminds me of a pair of Hurache’s I used to have when I was a teenager and surfing. They originated from California or Mexico. Anybosy remember those or am I showing my age!
Hi Nick, in Ubud you can find some shops that sell this kind of sandals and they look really good. Me and Sofia bought 3 pairs for her mother, my mother and my sister… I think they’re going to last long time. The price though was quite different. If I recall it well, I think they asked for about Rp.800,000 for each pair, and we bought 2 for Rp.500,000 in one shop and in another shop one for Rp.260,000. I still think the main streets in Ubud can be more expensive than Kuta, so I recon I overpaid, still, it’s a lot cheaper than Rp.450,000.
On the other and I recon you can’t really bargain the wife beating materials (hehehe).
G’Day Nick
A week ago, me and my girlfriend go shopping on Ubud at Dewi Shita street (I forgot the shop name, its sound like Zarisha or something like it)and we find lovely straw flop and painting sandals with much cheaper price. And geez mate, if you think that Kuta is cheaper than Ubud, you doin’ a big mistake. In Ubud you’ll get 2 pairs sandals for Rp.250,000
trust me, find that shop and you’ll change your opinion about Ubud.
Dear All customer
The price of the sandals was 450,000rp this is no true…..
Sorry mustadji shoes in seminyak never selling sandal price like that.
450,000rp for a pair of straw flops may be expensive if you want to use them as designed. But if you want to beat your bitches with them, then they are truly cheap. Imagine, you can beat the crap out of them bitches without bruising and causing serious bodily harms. Their skin will probably get very red, but then skin gets that way after sun tanning any way. So, go ahead buy a pair or two.
BTW, I thought you guys, Europeans and OZs, were supposed to be civilized. When did y’all start talking about beating your bitches?
