Ripping into a Subway Balinese Style, Kuta, Bali

Whenever you are Nasi Goreng-ed out, or Sate-ed out, there is a touch of Western delight in Jl Legian.

Cafe to Go is a quaint place out front of a Circle K mini-mart. There is only enough room for five tables in the smal area, but it is effective alfresco munching!. The actual preparation of the meals is located in a small corner inside the Circle K.

For a light lunch or a takeaway, this is the place to go. The small menu is full of surprises. A daily ‘Specials’ board displays a good range of tucker and changes daily. Today I was tempted by the great Oz favourite - a Vegemite and cheese roll but I declined (enough Vegemite already streams through my veins!).

Standard fare on the menu includes Garlic Foccahia bread with a chicken salad filling, chicken rolls, Cheese and Tuna, home-made meat pies, toasted sangers (sandwiches!), and the usual salad rolls. Each of these tempting delights in themselves is eloquent sufficiency. Tea and coffee as well as soft drinks are available.

Having over-taxed my stomach yesterday, ‘it’ decided a light lunch would suffice. The Garlic Foccachia bread roll with salad (Rp14,000) was my choice. I was surprised at the size of the 10″ rolls chock-a-block with super-fresh crispy salad. Absolutely delicious!.

Candika has always been a sucker for Vegemite since visiting Oz on so many occasions. So it was the Chese and Vegemite roll (Rp12,000) for the ‘Vegemite Kid’!.

We both agreed that the rolls were excellent value for money, and indeed, extremely ‘yummy’.

Atmosphere: Pleasant and Enjoyable
Food Quality: Very Good
Service: Polite and Friendly
Rating: 7.5

There are a number of Cafe to Go places in the Kuta/Legian area and each one of them in front of a Circle K mini-mart. There is a Cafe to Go located opposite the beach on Jl Pantai (Next to McDonald’s) and this makes it an ideal place to watch the sunset. Although there is a Subway restoran in Kuta, Cafe to Go are fantastic places to sit, have a chin-wag and soak up the rays whilst happily muching.

Great idea Barrie. Bali can build up on you and sometimes a short “time out” is needed. Having three children we find Waterbom is a good break or Ramayarna shopping centre has Harts Chicken for lunch and fixed price shops plus cheap DVD and Playstation games on top level.

G’Day Rob,

How right you are!. Even though I love Indo food and been travelling here for more years than I can remember, occasionally I get a yearing for a sanger or a good Barbie with a thick slab of T-Bone!.

With you having three young ‘uns, it must have been reasonably hard getting them adjusted to Indo food eh, or , did they slide right into the tastes?.

I’ll check out that Hart’s Chicken cos my misus is partial to a bit of ‘Western tucker’!.

Barrie,
Do you remember a place called “YANIS?”
It had the BEST Steaks in Bali!!! You could watch a replay of Aussie rules whilst tucking into a WESTERN sized Porterhouse with mushroom sauce & big thick chips! plus a salad & it was like $5. Bargain… My daughter prefers the Indo food, I wonder why, she only eats from our brown paper packages of rice, seaweed, fried chicken, egg & various other bit’s!
Tries to eat only with fingers in Australia too, but she is a sucker for Macca’s!!!!
