Thanks for the comments. Rich you gave many insights that were not far off the mark. In regard to expats and places like Canggu Club, KuDeTa, Bacio etc. a guy once told me there are 3 levels of expats in Bali. 1. The rich ones who have made it and who could live anywhere. These are the Canggu Club crowd. 2. Then you've got the bottom feeders who haven't made it but will do anything to stay in Bali. 3. Lastly there is the slim band of people who still have to work and who have a legitimate job with an income.

Why does a Balinese family borrow 3m rp from the bank for a ceremony? Same reason a person who earns 800,000rp per month spend 1.5m rp on a cell phone, or someone who earns that amount signing up for a new motorbike at 600,000rp per month for 3 years. There is little mental connection between their actions and the effects of those actions.

Observations from a recent holiday to Bali

1.What happened to the Rp5000 bintang ?
2.Put a friendly, loving Balinese behind the wheel of a car or motorbike and you get an instant asshole.
3. Welcome to "Bacio" home of the Rp55,000 rum and coke.
4.2020 Sunset road is the new Legian
5.Why do tourists eat at KFC and Macs when next store you have excellent warungs at a fraction of the price ?
6.International resort hotels rely on new visitors. Recent world events have changed potetinal first time visitors to the island.
7. Bali by the numbers, vsitor arrival counts ? If you believe them I know an excellent store in Kerobokan that sells original Rolexs. Balinese are talking in 10 year cycles.
8.Difficult for bule man to establish good relationship with Indonesian man because no matter what the subject, he is trying to seperate you from your money.
9.The post bomb party scene has mellowed. Gone are the full moon rave partys out on the Bukit. The glow sticks and extacy hugs have all succumbed to the polisi strong arm tatics in the night clubs.
10.Party scene now is more international and wealthy. Long live those loveable Aussies.
11.Why does a young Balinese family with a monthly income of Rp 800,000 borrow Rp 3.000.000 from the bank in Picatu for their childs 3 month ceremony ?
12.Surfing sector of visitor industry will grow significantly. Can't blow up the best damn waves in the world ! Incredible May
13.Large tour group sector will also remain strong, unfortunately putting the profits in only a few of the pockets.
14.Expat low life scum that use to frequent Double 6 beach has vanished. Yahoooooooooo
15.Wish I had an arak and madu for every new surf school.
16. Many young tourists are " hooking up " with their ipods, laptops or cell phones. Leave that crap at home, your on vacation..
17. Will somone please blow up Ku De Ta, Bali Deli and the Canggu Club.
18 US dollar is at a three year low trading against the Rp.8,640 thursday
19. Nice to see the new kid on the block, Sky Garden give the over priced, over rated Macaronis a run for their money.
20. Please excuse my spelling errors and some points of view.
21. Bali and it's people are invinceable.

A Hui Hou
