Jl. Majapahit leads into the loop that carries on round into Jl. Legian. This street is Jl.Patih Jelantik and is lined with tribal handicrafts, paintings and furniture. Once before I spotted wooden London telephone boxes, complte with the glass sign at the top. This there was guy busy with his work spread out along the street.
Close I stopped into a shop packed to the rafters with tribal art from Irian Jaya (West Papua). The owner was asleep in the back and I had to wake him up. He couldn’t speak much English, but understood pricing. He was asking 1m rp for a large tribal shield, 700,000rp for a meter long carving of a war canoe with men and 450.000rp for small carved figures. The stuff looked very ‘ethnic’ without the glossy tourist polish that normally get put out. He was also selling 2 large swordfish swords.
If you are interested in that type of stuff the shop is called Irian Jaya Primitive Art Shop.
