Jati guesthouse: Jl. Hanuman Ubud Bali

jati071105.JPGArriving in Ubud via a lovely route, I swung down through Jl. Raya Ubud, and then took a right turn down Jl. Hanuman, the downhill street that is lined with craft shops and home stays. I have stayed at a couple of places down here before and know they are fairly cheap, ideal in fact for someone who wants to access the downtown scene, like I do. My reason for coming to Ubud is to stay for few days and document more fully the accommodation scene and some of the highlights.

The guest house I chose was called Puri Jati guesthouse. I know that puri means palace and that jati means teakwood. The alley to Puri Jati is about 30 meters long and heading down it I met a lady in traditional costume with her young daughter. Kadek said she works at Puri Jati and I should inquire about rooms further down. After some steps I came to a scene reminiscent of every Balinese village, locals preparing for an upacara (ceremony). The owner, Putu said they have a wedding in 2 days and I am invited! The actual rooms were down at the far end of the steps, past the owner place and consist of 2-storey paces, simple in design and construction. The rooms back onto the sawah (rice fields) and I can hear the hum of the creatures that live there. My room has 2 beds, 1 double, the other single, a western toilet and a shower. Its simple but it will do. The price was 50,000rp. It is very relaxing sitting on the porch cranking out text on my Alpha Smart, I should do this more often.

I have stayed at a place down Jl Hanuman, but cannot remember the name, it had about 6 rooms with 2 single beds in each & western toilet & shower. But it also had 1 bigger room with a double bed & single bed & then a villa type room with double beds in one room & 2 single in another.

maddy & I stayed in the smaller ones when she was 2 yrs old & she spent everyday helping the family that owned the place!

To me these places are the only way to stay in Bali… Nothing better, especially with kids as they can become part of the day to day activities in the compound & learn so much!
I think at the time (5 yrs ago) it was about 40,000rp a night including breakfast…

We stayed for 2 weeks!

Nick could we please have photos of Puri Jati & & other Ubud places & food? Seems like since you lost your old camera you don’t take as many photos, as you used to. Your varied photos are one of the reasons why I read Baliblog every day. I was just looking at the Carl Parkes blog & it reminded me how lucky we all are to have you there as our eyes & ears, living a paradise, willing to share. His blog was just a bunch of commentary. Your gift to us all is a “here & now experience”.

We have slimed down the amount of photos we do to save time.

I am in the process of doing a guest house guide to Ubud with plenty of photos.

G’Day Nick,

Looking forward to it. Will you be checking out places like markets, locations and the ilk?.

Watch out for the monkeys at the Ubud Monkey Forest if you go there. They are a tad unfriendly and nmot like those at sangeh. Much akin to those at Uluwatu. Probably blood rellies!!

I’ve read somewhere all you have to do is give the monkeys some bananas, hold your camera well, and show no aggressively. Of course were talking of monkeys used to being feed by tourist, so they will be very disappointed if you pass through their territory without some goods for them!

Nick, I’ll be waiting your comments on places to grab some bites.

Do you know much about the Hotel Sari Health Resort, or the Bagus Jati Health Resort? Are they really old and delapidated, or in fair shape? Is the service good?

I would appreciate any comments any one can offer. I have been told the Villas Bali Hotel and Spa is really good, but a bit pricey.

Thank you.

Joyful
