Jl.Legian is what most tourists think of as the main street in Kuta (it isn’t, that would be Jl. Raya Kuta). The reason for this is the amount of shops and restaurants serving tourist needs. I have known one vendor for about 3 years now. Made from Karangasem used to work on Poppies II selling handicrafts, now she works at Reny’s Art shop III, which specializes in leather bags.
Made earns a small monthly wage like all the vendors, and her boss has an agreement that she can make a commission on goods sold. With so much of the same stuff showing up in other shops, its hard to make a living, especially as the shops outnumber the customers right now.
I asked Made some generic questions and gave her 5,000rp for food. She didn’t want to take it but I told her that friends help friends. I think there are a lot of people scratching their heads these days wondering how long they can survive in a down economy.
If you are on lower Jl. Legian, across from the yellow sign, say hello to Made, she’s friendly.
