In central Ubud checking out some of the guest houses. These are all homestays, meaning that you will be renting a house structure, or room in the local Balinese family's compound, complete with chickens, relatives, ceremonies and plenty of 'hello's. The going rate for one of these places is 50,000rp and for that you get your own room, with double bed, or 2 twins, fan, hot water, western toilet, porch with either couch or chairs. Breakfast is usually included in Ubud. I remember in 1993 the cost of a losman, or homestay was 8,000rp. Back then the rupiah was 2,000 to the dollar, so $4 a night. Twelve years later and its about $5.50, not bad I guess.
Riding around the lanes and the outskirts of Ubud I find homestays galore, I'm just starting with the ones right downtown. I highly recommend trying a homestay, they are affordable, friendly and give you an instant entry into Balinese culture.
