Visiting many of the homestays (guesthouses) in dwontown Ubud, I have been amazed the number, sixe and quality of the family temples. Actually every Balinese family has a family temple, but here in Ubud, where they seem to take ceremonies and offerings that bit more serious, the family temples are huge and extremely well decorated. Many times I would check out a 5 bedroom homestay and adjacent to the property is a temple compound of equal size, intericately carved and painted. There were times when I was in the middle of interviewing one of the owners and my eye would catch a piece of a large carving or design. I would stop and say 'man that's lovely'. The pavillion structures that are used for a variety of things including storing the temple umbrellas, cooking or receiving offerings, Used the same color scheme of gold, red and black.
The whole thing takes your breath away when accompanied by some well-attend thatched roof meru. A great intro to temple structure, right dwontown in Ubud.

G’Day Nick,
I tend to agree with you. The Balinese are more significantly aware in their attitudes with regards to ceremonies and the ilk.
In the more touristy areas it seems the Balinese are more ‘laid back’ in attitude than their counterparts in the country.
