My new computer has a DVD player and for the first time I bought some pirated DVD’s.
The place I shopped at on sunday, was located on Poppies II across from Pub Bagus. The staff told me the price was 10,000rp each, 1 free if I bought 5. That sounded like the deal so I chose Snatch, Oliver!, Scarface, Ronin, Apocalypse Now and Chopper.
Crime seems to feature in most of these, which doesn’t mean I necessarily like violence. Walking through the racks of movies it took me 20 minutes to pick these, not because of the choice, but because of the reality that dawned on me. That is, there are a ton of shitty movies out there. Sitting watching Jim Carey is my idea of torture, every line is screamed at max volume. Neo martial arts flicks are usually way over the top too. In Oregon I watched the blood thirsty Kill Bill, where people with swords attack each other for 100 minutes. I figured out that swords were dangerous in the first minute, but the director wanted to ram that home.
Nonetheless, I know there are movies out there that I have not seen that are quality. I’ll post any recommendations I find.
When buying DVD’s you can test them in the shop. Older movies are more reliable. You can get a huge discount for large number too.

Will do.
I’m not a huge Jim Carrey fan, but get Me, Myself and Irene, the funniest film I’ve seen.
Hi Nick. I bought 90 DVDs when I was up there last and the shop owner said I could buy more on line. I cant raise his email address so I was wondering if you have an email address fo this Poppies store and I could try there. I declared all my DVDs at customs and they told me they didnt care how many I had as long as they were all diffeant titles and therefore obviously for my own use. If you can help I would be grateful.
Nick . Could you give post the email address of this place please as I want to order some if poss. Thanks
I have also broughts heaps of dvd’s in bali and and lost the business card of the shop where I brought them. Can you give me an email address of somewhere where I can order more.

Nick re dvd’s
On Saturday,[25/3/6] we were in Bali for just the night. Went to the local DVD place in Shadedwa [sp?] lane. [the one that runs between Padma and Melassti. It was shut. Went to its sister shop in Padma. Lots of empty shelves and what they did have was old. The staff told me that they had been busted by the police and while I was still able to do some business, it was a bit cloak and dagger like. Other DVD shops in the area looked similar. Is the clamp down across Asia or Bali or just a couple of shops in Legian?
Regards
Bob
Bob, say it ain’t so!! Bali’s been a good source of DVDs. I’ve found though that about 10% of what I buy won’t work on my DVD player (even if they did when tested in the shop); of those, most will work on my computer. But I just bought a new multi-zone DVD player, and now they all work! Any updates on the DVD situation would be welcome…..
Duck. Because I was only in Bali for 24 hours, I did not have the opportunity to explore further. I was hoping Nick might keep his eyes out next time he is in Poppies 2 to see if it is more than those stores around Legian. While I did not have time to look for my own selection, the kids that fed the dog while I was away had given me a list which I handed over. I was told to come back in a few hours. Movies that seven weeks ago were sitting on the now empty shelves. When I went back, that’s when the paranoia started. Got 12 of the 15 movies requested. Might be a case of pay the “fine” and carry on when the heat dies down. Hopefully more information will come to light via Baliblog as you requested.
Bob, come to think of it, when I was last in Bali in Oct. 05, the usual little place I go to on Poppies Lane was gone–but there were many others around. Competion must be tough and the bigger places had way more selection than the little guy. Maybe he just went out of business.
On a related note, I’ve stopped buying CDs in Bali due to quality problems, especially towards the end of the disk. Seems they try to cram too many songs and something goes wrong with the copying. Bali CDs are only good for a preview of whether you want to buy (or download) the real thing in my opinion.
Hey is there anyone the could help me out by giving me contact details of a dvd seller so that i can buy them from bali. They are sooooo much cheaper than the rip off dvds sold here in Australia. So if anyone can help that would be appreciated.
G’Day Nick,
Grab a copy of ‘Sin City’. A brilliant movie. Another one I picked up that I enjoyed was ‘March of the Penguins’.
